The Job Farm A small family farm raising sustainable beef cattle high in the Allegheny Mountains of WV.

We are constantly experimenting with ways our cattle can work with the land for the benefit of soil, water, and wildlife. A small family farm, set along the Dryfork River and the Eastern Continental Divide, offering spring watered, rotationally grazed, distiller mash fed beef.

Morning cow math - we just moved the herd into a new paddock. Below is how we calculate stocking density (lbs of cattle per acre of pasture) in our paddocks.
Generally we observe animal condition and pasture condition to guide our moves, but it is nice to have numbers written down so we can compare our methods year to year.

90’ x 90’ paddock = 8,100 ft2.
8,100/ 43,560 ft2 per acre= 0.2 acres
10 cow/calf pairs = 11,000 lbs
3 steers, 1 bull = 4,000 lbs
8 heifers = 5,000 lbs
= 20,000lbs / 0.2 acres =100,000 lb/acre

This is on the low end of what is considered UDHG (ultra high density grazing).

Almost top of the world, looking up at the continental divide! Not flat, but limestone underneath makes great grassland! We just grazed this for 6 days in 3 paddocks with a watering lane on the log road back to the spring.
