Some families come to show camp just wanting to learn.

Others come with a goal.

And hereā€™s the thing about goals. Most of them arenā€™t a one-step process. You donā€™t go to a camp, learn a couple things, walk into the ring the next weekend and magically accomplish everything you set out to do.

Sometimes it takes a while.

Thatā€™s where Riley was when he came to show camp in Concordia, Kansas.

He and his family had goals. They came to camp, went home, and immediately went to work.

This year Riley finished 4th in goat showmanship for his age group. He was also 3rd in swine showmanship, in his FIRST year showing pigs.

And his family told me something I really liked hearing.

The things Riley learned at goat camp carried over into the swine show ring.

Did he win Champion or Reserve?

Nope.

But people noticed.

Numerous people commented on how much Riley had improved from last year to this year.

Thatā€™s a win.

Maybe not the final goal yet. But itā€™s another step toward it.

I love banners. I love seeing kids win them. A banner is proof that on that particular day, in that particular ring, you got the job done.

But you donā€™t need a banner to win.

If weā€™re really serious when we say this is about youth development, then getting better matters. Understanding why matters. Learning matters. Setting a goal, putting in the work, seeing progress, and then going back to work again matters.

Those things are infinitely more important than another wall decoration.

Weā€™ll keep working toward the banners.

But ultimately, weā€™re not just trying to develop better showmen.

Weā€™re trying to develop young men and women.

I love getting these messages.

Skylee did exactly what youā€™re supposed to do. She came to camp, listened, learned, and then went home and put it to work.

A day at camp is supposed to feel like a show. We work hard, we practice, and we try to make it as real as we can without the pressure of actually being judged.

But hereā€™s the deal. A kid spends 7 or 8 hours with me at a camp. Thatā€™s not enough time to win a buckle.

What you do when you get home is what matters. Practice. Work hard. Take what you learned and use it over and over until it becomes second nature. Then when show day gets here, thatā€™s just the day you go pick up the buckle for all the work youā€™ve already put in.

I say all the time that Iā€™m happy to be a small part of these kidsā€™ success, and I mean exactly that. Iā€™m just a small part. Theyā€™re the ones who have to go home and put in the time.

Congratulations Skylee! Reserve Champion Hog Showman and Grand Champion Lamb Showman.

Hard work pays off.

You would have been proud of these Garfield county kids here in Panguitch, UT. Eveyone of them that came to your clinic I believe placed in the top 4 in showmanship but most of them placed first or second !ā€

Congratulations to the Farnik Team!

Ella pulled the trigger again, earning Champion Intermediate Showman at the Morgan County Fair before going on to win Champion Round Robin Showman!

Wesson also had a great fair he won Reserve Champion right behind big sis. Heā€™ll get another chance to beat her when they both become seniors.

Morgan County is one of the tougher counties to compete in, making these accomplishments even more impressive.

Congratulations, Ella, Wesson, and the entire Farnik Team! Now itā€™s time to get ready for the State Fair. Best of luckā€”weā€™ll be cheering you on!

What an incredible fair! Not only did they sweep Grand Champion Junior and Senior Sheep Showmanship, they also took home Grand Champion Market Lamb. Thatā€™s an outstanding accomplishment and a testament to countless hours of hard work in the barn.
