It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Nope, it’s actually a drone! Last weekend we had our soybean fields aerial seeded with cover crop by drone! While this practice is more common in higher density ag areas, it’s a pretty new thing up here in northern Michigan. We were planting a mix of radish, oats, clover, and millet to help build the soil up and keep biological diversity in the ground in the offseason. By using drones, we were able to plant these fields before soybean harvest begins and eliminate driving a tractor and planter across the field which could create soil compaction from the tires. One of many regenerative ag practices we’re implementing at Sklarczyk Seed Farm to be as environmentally friendly as possible. 🌾🤎

We’re down to the last 2 days of the Otsego County Fair and there’s still plenty to see and do! The livestock auction is today at 3pm, and the Bump n Run and Night of Destruction demolition derby are tonight and tomorrow night in the grand stands! We are proud to be a Gold corporate sponsor of the fair again this year, as well as donating 4 ton of corn to fill the sandbox corn pit, which has been a favorite new attraction! We were also happy to have sponsored 2 youth livestock showmen’s pig and steer projects this year and were so proud of how Andrew & Sparty and Kingston & Cosmo did on Tuesday, along with our kids and their friends. No, there is no carnival this year, but you will not be disappointed with all there is to see and do. Come learn about local agriculture, see all of the animals that have been cared for and loved for the past several months. Show your support for these youth exhibitors and our fair board volunteers who worked tirelessly to bring your family a great week of fun events! 🐖🐑🦃🐓🐇🐂🐎🐐🫏🌽💚

It’s no secret that air quality from northern wildfires is absolutely wretched right now. Our current air quality index is 1197, putting us in hazardous range (for reference, good AQI is 0-50, moderate AQI is 51-100…). Our crops will certainly feel the effects of this smoke and ash. Sunlight is filtered and blocked. The pores on plant leaves, called the stomata, become clogged which slows down photosynthesis, but our main concern is for our staff. Everyone was offered a mask, and most team members headed home early unless working in an air filtered environment. We’re hoping the wind shift and this smoke blows out soon, but praying for rain to help control the vast expanse of wilderness fires. 🤞🏼🙏🏻🔥

We had a lot of fun at our hometown’s 4th of July celebration on Saturday! Several of our team members braved the heat and humidity and handed out almost 2,000 bags of snack sized Lay’s chips to spectators along the parade route! We love seeing our neighbors and showing visitors how great it is to live in Northern Michigan! 🥔🎆🎇🇺🇸🌱

This spring has been tough. We were plagued by a very cold and very wet spring which delayed planting on small grains, soybeans, and field corn by 1-2 weeks. But just 7 days after being planted, these tiny soybeans are starting to pop up out of the ground. A little sun and a little water go a long way. Cheers to the beginning of what we hope will be a safe and bountiful crop year for all of us farmers! ☀️💧🌽🌾🌱

This is hometown pride! Johannesburg and Lewiston are very small towns, but I love that our community doesn’t hold back when it comes to supporting youth programs. Students athletes are hardworking, coachable kids. They have to keep their grades up, work together as a team toward a shared goal, and pick themselves back up after a loss. We’re happy to support our JL athletics and student clubs, and we’ll be ready to cheer for our Cardinals on Football Friday Nights this fall! ❤️🤍🖤🏈

On Friday, Ben was given the distinct honor of representing agriculture at the largest gathering of American farmers in the history of the White House on behalf of his leadership with the National Potato Council. He was joined by several others from the NPC, as well as many from Michigan ag industries. If you don’t have a seat at the table, you’re probably on the menu…. but we’d like to be both a part of the conversation and on your plate! We’re grateful he was given this incredible opportunity to help shape the future for us to provide a safe, environmentally conscious, stable food supply for all of you. 🥔🇺🇸

Yesterday was National Agriculture Day! We celebrated our home state’s diverse and impactful ag presence with a staff lunch featuring lots of Michigan commodities and wrapped up the evening learning about agriculture with our local Cub Scout den, where each boy got to plant their own mini tubers to take home. Did you know Michigan is the second most diverse ag state in the US? The Mitten State is second only to California! 🥔🫘🍷🌰🥩🥓🥚🫜🥒🌽🍒🥭🍎🍐🫐🍇🥬
