Allow me to introduce you to our koelschip (coolship)!

This piece of equipment is pretty special to us! For those unfamiliar, a coolship is a traditional vessel for cooling b**r used historically by some breweries in Belgium, England, and Germany. Its most well known application is Belgian Lambic, or Méthode Traditionnelle (spontaneous fermented b**r) for those of us doing it outside of Belgium, but has other uses like as a settling vessel or even open fermentation.

Other than being huge nerds about traditional brewing methods, we’re honored to be receiving this piece from our buddy Devin at Dҽρσƚ Sƚɾҽҽƚ Bɾҽɯιɳɠ to continue the history of this coolship! A passing of the torch, so to speak.

We’ve got all kinds of plans for this thing and I can’t wait to start using it next year!

My buddy Devin.

Back in the early The Edisonian Brew Shop days it became a pretty common occurrence for a customer to reference “My buddy Devin” with something brewing related he did- ie “My buddy Devin makes the best la**rs around” or “my buddy Devin does a decoction mash on his Pilsner”. It happened so often it became a bit of an inside joke for us (as we had yet to befriend Devin). He was a mythical brewer who could seemingly execute anything with perfection. We would joke things like “did you know my Buddy Devin INVENTED decoctions?!”

Not too long after, we met Devin, befriended him, and thus he became MY buddy Devin. Out of all of the breweries in our region, Dҽρσƚ Sƚɾҽҽƚ Bɾҽɯιɳɠ has the most lore. Devin single handedly took ownership of the legacy brewery he worked at and made it his own ,while maintaining the reputation for great b**r flavored b**r it was already known for. Also, Devin is responsible for many firsts for the region. The first mixed culture sour- it wasn’t us, my buddy Devin did it first. Also, the first coolshipped spontaneous b**r, and even the first hazy IPA. Our brewing scene owes a lot to the institution that is Dҽρσƚ Sƚɾҽҽƚ Bɾҽɯιɳɠ and our buddy Devin. We at Little Animals owe a lot to him for not only being a trail blazer for the local scene, but the numerous times he bailed us out with last minute help, collaborated on b**rs with us, and promoted us with carrying our b**r at Depot. Today, sadly, we’re gathering there for one last hurrah. Depot Street will be missed, but not forgotten. The influence this brewery has had on the region is forever. Thank you Devin, for everything.

PS- Depot is gone but the Bitter Brewer’s Brigade is forever. There will be future collabs!

Starting to feel more like a brewery in here!

I thought I’d post an update for everyone wondering about our status/ when we might open-

It’s honestly difficult to predict but I *hope* springish. We’ve had some setbacks with the building, plus some things in life that have prevented me from devoting 100% of my time to the brewery renovation- but we are making good progress! We’ve been working closely with our architect Dave McClelland to come up with what we feel is the best possible use of our space, and that design is nearly finished. We’re so excited with what we’ve come up with, and can’t wait to make it happen! Next comes getting plans submitted/approved and executing the work- which isn’t all that much in the grand scheme of things but will take some time. We got most of our brewing equipment moved in as of yesterday and all those tanks sitting around have me itching to finally get back in the brewery!

I’ll try to post updates more regularly, I feel I’ve been too quiet the last few months. We appreciate you all sticking with us, and look forward to inviting you into Little Animals 2.0 for a b**r in the not too distant future! Onward!

Check out our new logo! 👀

HUGE thanks to our good friend for creating this design! We wanted something that represented the embodiment of our little eyes from the original logo in the form of whimsical monk-like brewers, with stylistic nods to some of our favorite Belgian breweries that all have that hand drawn comic vibe. She absolutely nailed it! No AI here, we prefer real art drawn by real people! 💪🤘
