PFAS don't go away. Not in the environment, not in your body.

In late 2023, the Sierra Club tested 20 lakes and rivers around Kingsport and Johnson City. 60% came back positive for PFAS: the highest levels downstream from the Holston Army Ammunition Plant, and yes, Boone Lake tested positive too.

A few things worth knowing:
💧 The EPA's first enforceable PFAS limit (4 parts per trillion) doesn't have to be met by utilities until 2031
💧 Pitcher and fridge filters generally don't remove PFAS, but reverse osmosis and high-capacity carbon filtration do
💧 If you're on a well, no one is responsible to test it but you

You’ve researched the neighborhood, the schools, the commute. You’ve inspected, negotiated, and closed. But there is one thing almost nobody thinks to check before they unpack: the water.

Moving is the perfect moment to get a baseline water test: before the kids start drinking from the tap, before you discover the hard water left scale inside the dishwasher the previous owners left, before you set expectations about what "normal" looks and tastes like in your new home.

Chlorine in your tap water is there for a good reason; it is one of the most effective public health interventions in history. But by the time it reaches your faucet, its job is done. And what lingers in your water (and your shower steam) is worth understanding.

Did you know that standard carbon filters remove chlorine but do NOT reliably remove chloramine? More than 1 in 5 Americans drink water treated with chloramines, which require a different type of filter media entirely. If your utility uses chloramines and you have a pitcher filter, it may not be doing what you think.

And then there are disinfection byproducts: compounds formed when chlorine reacts with organic matter in source water. In Johnson City, some of these are showing up at 52-64 times above EWG health guidelines.

If your home is on a private well, nobody is monitoring your water quality but you. No utility. No government agency. No annual inspection. The EPA's rules for public water systems simply do not apply.

In northeast Tennessee, iron, bacteria, sulfur, and nitrates are the four most common well water issues — and none of them can be reliably detected by taste or smell. Water quality in a well can change without any warning, often tied to seasonal rainfall, land use nearby, or the gradual degradation of an aging well casing.

Both the EPA and CDC recommend testing at minimum once a year. If you have never tested yours, or it has been more than a year, this post explains what to test for, when to test more frequently, and what treatment looks like for each of the most common issues in our region. 👇

In fall 2023, the Sierra Club tested water across northeast Tennessee around Kingsport and Johnson City. Sixty percent of surface water samples came back positive for PFAS contamination, with the highest levels found downstream from the Holston Army Ammunition Plant.

This is not a national news story. These are the waterways in our backyard. Some of them feed local water supplies.

There is a completely free tool that lets you look up exactly what has been detected in your tap water — and almost nobody knows it exists.
The EWG Tap Water Database pulls testing data from nearly 50,000 utilities across the US. Search your zip code and you will see every contaminant detected in your local supply, plus how those levels compare to both legal limits and health-based guidelines. The gap between those two numbers is often striking.
In Johnson City, for example, one disinfection byproduct was detected at 64 times above EWG's health guideline — while the utility was in full legal compliance.

"Softener" and "conditioner" get used interchangeably all the time but they are not the same thing, they do not produce the same result, and buying the wrong one is a frustrating and expensive mistake.
A water softener uses ion exchange to remove hard minerals entirely, giving you genuinely soft water. A water conditioner changes the mineral structure so they stop sticking to surfaces: great for scale prevention, but it will not change how your skin and hair feel in the shower.
Which one is right for you depends entirely on what you are trying to solve. This post explains both technologies clearly, cuts through the "salt-free softener" marketing confusion, and helps you ask the right question before you spend anything. 👇
