My buff Orphington had been broody all summer. I kept removing her clutch of eggs every time she went out of the nesting box (which was not often) but I could not change her mind. I finally gave in and let her have her eggs. Since no other hen of mine has successfully hatched their own, I figured she’d give up on her own eventually. And she did ….one day after she hatched herself a little mini me. Unfortunately, 2 days later, I was very sad to realize this chick was nowhere to be found. No idea what happened to it. I keep hoping it will magically reappear, as unlikely as I know that is to happen. Additionally, the cat distribution system has brought two more kittens to the Cluckery. The egg business has slowed down to a much more manageable pace with only 7 hens in the house

It’s been a ROUGH week at the Cluckery. Lost 4 hens to c***s this week. It seems we are inundated with them and they seem to have little to no fear of me. I have a momma c**n with 5 babies who descends upon the property every afternoon and digs through my planters and flower beds, uprooting them to find bugs and grubs. The very next night after a hen massacre, I took the dog out for potty and heard a chicken scream in the dark. Went running down to the coop, bathrobe flying and phone light turned on, screaming at the c**n(s) to get out of there. As I arrived, they released their hot meal and I saw one hen run to the ladder of the coop and wedge herself between the ladder and fence. We reinforced any openings with more fencing, zip ties, plastic mats, etc. to be safe, I’ve gone back to locking them in the coop at night. I was able to save that poor girl (one of my OGs), but she’s got bites and hunks of flesh missing from her chest and neck. She’s laying low and the rest are leaving her alone, thankfully. I am down to 7 hens and 1 good boy rooster from 36 total. I have one special hen left that lays olive colored eggs. Lost the hens that lay blue, pink and green eggs this week. May hatch some new chicks this spring……. Or, I may just give up on this all together. Time will tell.

In addition to raising the animals on my little farm, I’ve always been somewhat of a “cat lady” and taken in and tamed feral kitties, nursed sick and injured ones back to health, and found good homes for them whenever I could. I’m currently taking care of a colony of 10 at my house, in addition to my indoor kitties. A very young and pregnant momma showed up at my doorstep and was added to the colony over the winter. She gave birth in the heated garage in early spring. It’s a bittersweet moment this morning as the kittens we’ve been raising for the last 2 months start to go to their forever homes. The two females will become a part of this sweet family. The little boy (named “Louie” by his adoptive family) goes to his forever home on Thursday this week. After this, Momma gets spayed and I am happy to report Momma has a new forever home too!
