All the national and local news can talk about is the latest cold snap and snowstorms. They like to tell us to "stay inside," "travel as little as possible," and "bring your pets inside." Makes me cringe...
While all you townies are inside eating your steak and eggs for breakfast, watching the snow fall and holding your weiner dog, I would like you to say a little "mental thank you" to all the cowboys, feedtruck drivers, ranchers and farmers out there, in the cold. Ranchers don't get to call in for a snow day. They don't get to stay inside because the weather sucks. They must buck through those snowdrifts, with pickups, tractors, horses or a combination of the three. Their livestock were bred, born and raised to brave all the weather Mother Nature could throw at them. (These animals don't NEED to come inside) These men and women do this for a paycheck that is substantially smaller than most town jobs offer, but it's way of life that is substantially more rewarding.
This photo was taken today, by Nels Lindberg, at a Kansas feedlot, with the caption "Alleys cleared and cattle fed by 7 a.m." So I ask, "What had you done by 7 a.m. this morning?"
