Fall on the farm update for the week ending 10/25/2025!

This week was a busy one! After a brief rain delay we resumed corn harvest Tuesday afternoon. Together with Dad, we tag teamed a farm we rent together. This farm has been in our family since 1910. Today, a cousin to us owns it and recently we were able to begin farming it! It’s a special feeling to get to work land that was purchased and farmed by my Great Great Grandfather.

Harvest progressed throughout the week with yields continuing to be all over the board. This year has made it easy to identify where the “heavier”, darker soils are in fields and where the “lighter”, typically lower in organic matter soils are. It is also apparent who/where received timely moisture and who didn’t.

We were able to get moved to the last “block” of corn for the 2025 harvest season on Friday. It will take us a good 4 days to get it all harvested. We are hoping to beat the forecasted rain due in for Wednesday. Also on Friday, Farm Credit provided a delicious pulled pork sack lunch at Trillium’s feed mill. Thank you! Fred was in great approval of the lunch.

This week we also made great progress on spreading. Another good week and we should get close to being caught up to the trucks hauling.

Lastly, thanks to Fennig Equipment, we were able to demo a Salford tillage tool- the I-2200. We were able to try it on Saturday in some corn stalks, incorporating cover crop seed and intend to do some other trials with it this coming week.

We hope you’ve enjoyed following along this fall. Stay tuned for next week’s update!

Fall on the farm update for the week ending 10/18/2025!

This week good progress was made on all fronts in time for rain on Sunday. We spread the last of our chicken litter ahead of our intended corn acres for 2026 and continued working on spreading and hauling for customers. This week we also got all of our cover crop seed spread ahead of the 2026 corn crop. We’re using barley and crimson clover this year again. Hopefully the rain will get it off to a good start! We made good progress on corn harvest this week as we near the halfway mark. We had a few breakdowns this week (some pretty major) but we managed to continue making good progress.

This coming week we will continue to haul and spread manure in preparation for next years crop as well as continue to work on corn harvest.

Fall on the farm update for the week ending 10/11/2025!

As anticipated, we finished up the last few acres of soybeans Monday ahead of Monday night and Tuesdays rain. We received anywhere from 1” to 1.5” of rain. We hauled in the last of the custom beans Tuesday and Wednesday as well as changed the oil and checked over the combine in preparation for corn.

Wednesday we dove into corn harvest. We knew we were dry (broke records for how dry we were here in central Ohio) during the critical grain fill period and therefore were concerned with how signifcantly that would negatively impact yields. Our concerns were confirmed with what seems to be roughly a 25%+ reduction in yield compared to APH. It’s extra hard to stomach that because the corn “had the look” (the picture of green corn was from the same farm taken the last week of July) of what we thought could have been yields that would break personal records and it had the tissue samples to back it up. In the lower lying ground where it was able to retain moisture and the plant stay alive it was 300+ bu/ac. But you get on the lighter soils and hilltops that “burnt” out it was >100 bu/ac. Unfortunately in our area the majority of our soils are those lighter soils.

This week we also continued to haul and spread manure in preparation for next years crop!

Next week we will hopefully get completely caught up on hauling manure, continue spreading manure, get our cover crop seeded and hopefully get the combine fixed and resume corn harvest.

Fall on the farm update for the week ending 10/5/2025!

This week we were full speed ahead on bean harvest, manure hauling and spreading. We wrapped up our own bean acres, combined forces with Dad and put a big dent in his acres and started into the last of our custom acres. We made it down to the last 20 acres to finish up Monday.

One thing that we make a priority to do at the end of each day is remove all the shields off the combine and blow the dust and chaff off with a leaf blower. It makes service the next morning more efficient and effective, allowing us to give a thorough daily inspection as well as reduces the risk of fire in the event of a bearing failure or some other mechanical failure. We had a bearing fail on an idler pulley on the clean grain elevator of the combine and as you can see from the picture it got pretty toasty. I feel fairly confident that if we didn’t clean the machine daily, we probably would’ve had a serious fire.

In other farm happenings this week, great progress is being made on the pad for our new equipment storage barn being built this month.

Looking ahead to this week, we should easily finish bean harvest Monday ahead of rain showers monday night and Tuesday. We will get the combine home for an oil change and service in preparation for corn harvest. We expect to take delivery of our cover crop seed as well. Depending on the amount of rain we receive, we will start back up on corn harvest, seeding our cover crops on harvested bean acres and continue hauling and spreading manure. Stay tuned!

Fall on the farm update for the week ending 9/27/2025!

This week we finally received some much needed rainfall after nearly 2 months of virtually no rain. Therefore we weren’t in the fields this past week. We took this time to complete miscellaneous shop projcts and service the equipment in preparation of a busy week to come.

Looking ahead to this week, with a little luck and a lot of hard work, we should nearly complete soybean harvest and be ready to switch to corn again. We will also resume hauling and spreading chicken manure.

Fall on the farm update for the week ending 9/20/2025!

This week was the first full week of harvest for 2025 with the focus being on soybean harvest! Yields have been a mixed bag from below average to average. It seems to correlate with late season rainfall. So far it seems our northern acres in Knox county are doing better than here in Licking. The moisture content of the beans has been some of the driest we have ever seen! At one point the monitor on the combine was reading 6.8%! Average moisture probably is somewhere between 8%-9%. This week was a very productive week. In fact, we broke a personal record, harvesting just over 140 acres in 1 day with one machine. Well deserved recognition goes out to our team for their part in making that happen.

This week, Garrabrant Farm Services LLC kicked off spreading as well, in preparation for the 2026 growing season. We were able to get both machines out and going and make sure everything was functioning properly. All systems are a go! We worked on incorporating the manure as well.

The trucking side of things has been busy also. In the mornings before it was dry enough to haul beans, we worked on hauling out the corn we shelled last week after drying it. We also resumed manure hauling.

It was a very productive week in review and we’re looking forward to the start of another!g t

We finished the early corn we had ready and got switched over to beans. Both corn and bean yields are below average so far as we kind of anticipated would be the case due to minimal rain since the end of July. That being said, we still are feeling blessed to have something to harvest and that we’re able to do so as a family along with a great team.

This week it’s full bore bean harvest, hauling out dry corn, start spreading manure, incorporating manure and hauling manure into the fields to be spread… Yeah it’s going to be a busy week and require all hands on deck 💪🏻
