It’s a shame how much effort or lack of has gone into so many cannabis operations just to be abandoned. This is my project for the day. Disassembling 4-5 of these houses and relocating them to the farm to be used for fruit and vegetable production.

Breaking down heads of garlic into individual cloves for planting at Ruzycki Farms. I chose only three varieties this year.

Music, which I always grow, has been difficult to find lately. Most garlic suppliers were sold out, but I was lucky enough to get 2 pounds.

• MUSIC’ PORCELAIN GARLIC

FLAVOR PROFILE: hot, robust flavor. Sweetens when baked.

• CHESNOK RED’ HARDNECK GARLIC

Highly productive purple stripe hardneck variety.

Delicious when roasted.

Medium in stem height, but big underground bulbs.

• UKRAINIAN RED’ ROCAMBOLE GARLIC

FLAVOR PROFILE: strong and spicy when raw, softens and loses aftertaste when sautéed.

APPEARANCE/WRAPPER: mahogany-colored bulbs.

With the price per pound going as high as it has, I have reduced the number of pounds to be planted by more than half.
Just a few years ago the average price per pound was $18. Since then it has gone to $20 and now up to $22+ per pound.
By trying to have a mix of flavor profiles and options for chefs and our farm customers, then to have enough of each variety to have a decent amount available can get quite expensive fast.

During a conversation with Michael this morning, I was reminded why he didn’t get to go on our trips to Hatch, New Mexico, this summer.

Out of three trips, I made two of them alone, while Michael missed all three trips to my beloved New Mexico.

The reason? PUMPKINS.

He had just planted the pumpkins, and they needed daily attention. And because he planted them just far enough away from a water source, they had to be HAND WATERED. Every. Single. Day.

And when Oklahoma decided temperatures were going to stay above 100 degrees, those pumpkins needed watering multiple times a day.

Well, here we are, 130 days later, and I have a porch FULL of locally grown, organic pumpkins that have received more personal attention this summer than most of us have in our entire lives.

So, if you’re looking for pumpkins that were grown with love, determination, a ridiculous amount of water, and one man’s refusal to let them die, we’ve got you covered.
