Sheep and goat breeding season is upon us! Delta Livestock Diagnostics supports sheep and goat producers with our pregnancy diagnostic services.

Our serological ELISA pregnancy testing offers detection at 28 days post breeding in goats and 35 days post breeding in sheep.

Pregnancy sample submissions are processed on Friday, with results by end of day.

As summer transitions into fall, cattle producers should continue to watch for anaplasmosis, a disease caused by Anaplasma marginale that affects red blood cells.

Transmission can occur through:
• Ticks and biting flies
• Reuse of blood-contaminated needles
• Contaminated veterinary equipment

Watch for:
• Weakness or lagging behind the herd
• Decreased feed intake
• Fever
• Pale mucous membranes
• Jaundice
• Abortion in pregnant cows
• Sudden death

🧪 Ask Delta: When should I send a sample to the lab?

Not every situation looks the same, but diagnostic testing can be especially helpful when you notice unexplained illness, changes in performance, increased mortality, or signs of disease in your herd or flock. Testing can help identify what’s going on and give producers better information to make informed management and treatment decisions.

When in doubt, talk with your veterinarian about whether diagnostic testing is appropriate and what type of sample should be collected.

Symptoms vs. Diagnosis: Why Guessing Isn't Enough 🔬🐄

A cough, diarrhea, fever, or poor appetite can point to more than one disease. In livestock, different illnesses often share the same symptoms but they don't always require the same treatment. That's why a diagnosis matters.

Diagnostic testing helps identify the actual cause of illness, allowing producers and veterinarians to make informed treatment and management decisions instead of relying on symptoms alone. When it comes to herd health, the right diagnosis is the first step toward the right response.

Every person who enters your livestock area can potentially bring pathogens with them. Keep unnecessary traffic out of your barns and pastures, and have necessary visitors follow your biosecurity procedures before entering. Know who is coming in, where they’ve been, and what steps they’ve taken to prevent bringing something with them.
