The Midnight Melon Thieves
Walked out to find several of these in the melon fields…
When most people think of coyotes, they picture a cunning predator stalking rodents, rabbits, or livestock. However, I’m here to tell you a very different story…coyotes have a massive sweet tooth for watermelons and cantaloupes!
As omnivores, coyotes change their diet dramatically depending on what the season offers. During the sweltering heat of late summer and early autumn, natural streams and ponds often dry up. Ripe melons offer the perfect dual remedy…a source of hydration paired with easily digestible sugars and carbohydrates!
Distinguishing a coyote raid from other garden pests comes down to the bite mark. Coyotes use their strong jaws and sharp incisors to puncture the tough outer rind, tearing open an access hole to lick and bite out the soft interior flesh.
Unlike raccoons, which hollow out fruits using their small paws, coyotes leave clean, deliberate bite marks and often abandon the hollowed shell while it is still attached to the vine. Further confirmation usually comes from nearby s**t, which will often be packed with intact melon seeds and fibrous rind fragments. I am confirming this watermelon attack as coyote predation. Jerks.
Keeping these clever canines out of the patch requires a proactive strategy, as standard garden defenses rarely stop them for long.
Standard four-foot garden fences are minor obstacles. An effective barrier must stand at least six feet tall, ideally fitted with a top-mounted "coyote roller" or underground wire mesh to prevent them from digging beneath it.
Motion-activated sprinklers, night lighting, and guard animals (such as livestock guardian dogs or donkeys) provide useful defense layers, though coyotes quickly learn to ignore static or predictable scares. The only reliable deterrent for me is an electric fence. And unfortunately, they can learn to jump that fence. They are very clever!
Ultimately, melon raiding is a prime example of coyote resilience. These opportunistic foragers will keep finding clever ways to make our crops their own!
