We will soon begin our third year of breeding for the American Red standards. Two years of using Boer bucks has produced more color and heavier birth and one year weights. We continue to cull for conformation/performance faults. We look forward to next years crop of kids.

Record keeping helps producers make informed decisions to improve their herd's genetics and manage their resources more effectively. For example, a producer can use the data to identify the most productive does for breeding and to calculate if it's more cost-effective to supplement feed for faster gains.
The Boer goat is renowned for its exceptional growth rate and carcass characteristics, while the Kiko goat is prized for its hardiness, high parasite resistance, and productivity in low-input, forage-based systems.
When comparing the performance of Boer and Savannah goats, the key difference lies in their approach to meat production: Boer goats excel under higher management and nutrition for rapid growth, while Savannahs thrive on low-input, forage-based systems due to their superior hardiness. Savannahs are often compared to Boers, and both are large, muscular meat goat breeds originally from South Africa.

AI quote. "Key performance measures"

Reproduction

This is often considered the most important trait for meat production, as it directly relates to the number of kids a doe can raise. Key measures include: Fertility and kidding rate: The proportion of does that get pregnant and deliver live kids.

Prolificacy and number of kids weaned: The number of offspring born and successfully weaned. Selecting for a higher twinning rate can help improve this.

Litter weight: The total weight of the kids at weaning, which indicates the doe's productivity.

What is the definition of performance?
The term "performance" refers to how well a person, machine, organization, or action carries out a task, function, or role. The specific meaning depends heavily on the context in which it is used.

What is your meat goat performance standard?
Meat goat performance refers to the comparative evaluation of goats for key production traits that impact the profitability of a herd. These traits focus on reproduction, growth, and carcass quality. Performance testing helps producers make better decisions about breeding and culling to improve their overall herd.

It is the time of year decisions are made, who stays and who goes. This Mom did not give the color I wish but she contributes in many other ways. We must have patience.

Happy to see these hitting the ground. Everybody is gonna get fat I hope. 😁

As you can see our color is all over the place. It will be a couple of generations more before we are consistent. It is always amazing to me how strong the "red heads" color is from the Boer lines. We also know they will contribute in other ways. One brick/block at a time.

Topic for discussion COLOR. Is this a brown color? Red? Reddish brown? Brownish red? I have read a lot about the genetics of goat color in the last couple of years. I like the coat length and texture we are getting. But it also depends on the sun angle 😁 Please share your thoughts.
