Mountain Top Farms

Mountain Top Farms Mountain Top Farms offers fresh, raw, local honey and occasionally gourmet foods. At Mountain Top Farms, it's all about making life sweet!

What began with two beehives on a mountain top above Lake Tenkiller in Oklahoma has turned into a real labor of love and resulted in beautiful, award-winning honey. We recently branched out to offer gourmet foods such as smoked nuts (almonds, cashew, pine nuts, and pecans), smoked cheeses, and mixes (dips, baking mixes, etc.).

These ladies are so hot they are hanging out in a cluster on the front of their hive. It is called "bearding." Can you guess why? We brought them some watermelon as a treat this evening to help them cool off.

Well, it has been a rough week for some of our bees. They suffered a bear attack, not once, but three times in our yard this week (one of those times in the pouring rain). We decided to relocate them this evening. They are now on the property of some nearby friends, along with our other bees. Those girls are survivors, and we hope they aren't too traumatized to stay in their new location.

We've been seeing activity in the hives, and we left all the honey for the bees this past year, so we are hoping for an earlier honey harvest this year! We have more hives to visit, but we're hopeful!

When these cold temperatures dip into low double digits and even single digits, you may wonder how honeybees can survive. Here is some great information on how they do it, from pushing drones out of the hive in late fall to shivering/vibrating in a cluster to keep warm. Check it out!

Winter survival is a team effort for honey bees. Together, they huddle, shiver, and feed on honey to keep warm until spring.
