Our Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys are growing up fast. It won’t be long until they are ready to adopt and bring home for your Thanksgiving or holiday dinner. What do you do on a rainy Saturday morning? Well, we are spending our day cleaning out duck coops. By the time we are done they will have nice clean bedding to sleep in and lay their eggs. As a benefit we are getting mulch for the garden this year.

Spent some time today working on clearing some brush and dead leaves from area that we are working to reclaim. Hopefully, soon this area will be cleared and usable for pasture. We are even considering some goats.

Approaching the end of another year many people like to reflect on the past year and make plans for the coming year. For us, this year has been a learning year for sure. During 2023, we experimented with raising three batches of broiler chickens. The idea was to document the growing process and find out how much it costs to raise a baby chicken from day one to processing. We also took time to look at how to optimize operations for the benefit of raising a happy and healthy chicken. So, during 2023, we raised approximately one hundred chickens from one day old to being processed.

Did you know that all our chickens ate only organic non-gmo feed and were raised on grass for most of their lives.

We are currently planning for 2024. How many chickens should we raise and how many batches will we raise? During the coming year, we would also like to explore scaling operations. Stay tuned and let us know if you or someone you know might be interested in some of the best tasting chicken around.

Sometimes while trying to get done with chores before the coming storm you just need to stop and enjoy the beauty of the storm. Yesterday nature reminded me that even in the storms of life we can stop and give thanks to the Lord. He is always good.

Farming has its highs and lows. Two nights ago we lost a Guinea fowl that was out. All we found were a few feathers. Last night we saw this. A bobcat was sitting on the fence looking at our duck coop. We are certainly glad the ducks were safe.
