This sow was suffering from mastitis in one of her mammary glands. To properly drain the infection, we carefully used a sterile needle to dilate the teat opening, allowing the infected material to drain completely. Once the gland was emptied, we infused an antibiotic directly into the infected mammary gland and also administered an injectable antibiotic to help treat the infection systemically. Finally, we applied a teat sealant over the teat to help prevent additional bacteria from entering while the area heals.

Early treatment is important with mastitis to help reduce pain, prevent the infection from worsening, and improve the animal’s recovery.
