Life has been challenging in the farm lately. Doing everything alone has been rough but when I spend time with my birds my heart is full and happy. This has been a very hot, extremely humid summer here in middle Georgia and I was unfortunate to lose a couple of my first hens to what I believe were heat related issues. The other issue is always predators. Snakes are bad here not to mention the hawks, fox, coyote, opossum, etc. Everything eats chickens. Snakes have taken multiple chicks, quail, and even a small hen. I do my best to snake proof the coops but they are very persistent. I do not free range my birds with exception to the turkey as they wouldn't last a day. If they are out then I am with them. Losing a feathered friend is hard as they become part of the family and you have memories with them and remember their silly personalities or quirky little habits. Hug your pets and appreciate each day because you never know how long you have to love them. πŸ™πŸ’œπŸ£πŸ₯πŸ“

I haven't been on here much lately but life never stops rolling along on the farm. I just wanted to speak about molting for a minute because poor Jake is going through a hard molt. I also have some of my good laying hens that are molting so I haven't taken too many pics lately. Everyone looks unkempt and homeless lol. So look at those new feathers coming in on big Jake! He looks terrible and doesn't feel great but imagine those new feathers poking through. Ouch. Many birds get slightly lethargic, eat less, and tend to stay off to themselves more. I try to add extra protein, vitamins, and sometimes even a feather fixer feed to help them along. So when you see a rough looking bird with new feather shafts coming through be gentle or refrain from touching them and make sure they are getting the proper nutrition to help them along during this stressful time for them. πŸ’œπŸ¦ƒpic of Jake just before he started molting included to show what a beautiful boy he is and will be again 😍πŸ₯°

I present to you the beautiful "Fluffanutta". She is an adorable frizzle and this was the only pic where she wasn't screaming so I'm hoping that means she's a girl πŸ˜‚ I love those crazy frizzle feathers πŸ’œ pics of parents included. I can never believe how hard it is to get pretty colors from pretty colored parents. Either way I love her and I like to see each day how her feathers change.

Sometimes you just have to take a moment and just be present. Just enjoy the company of the deer, the birds, the butterflies, your own animals, and even you own company. Just because you are alone doesn't mean you have to be lonely. I get more therapy out in my yard than anywhere else. Yes it's 100+ degrees and I dread the sweating profusely but once I'm out there it's my favorite time of my day. This beautiful lady was napping in my yard behind my fence and watched me as I was feeding. They know safety and they know good souls πŸ’œ

Had to share because they make my day just a little bit better. Yes it's legal to feed them here and yes the three of us neighbors all feed them. I love baby season the most. It cracks me up when I go into the feed shed and come out to them all staring at me πŸ˜‚ They know where to go and who to look at lol. They get so close. It's very cool just to sit and watch them. πŸ’œπŸ¦ŒπŸ¦ŒπŸ¦ŒπŸ¦Œ

Love this family even if they are not truly all family. Shadow has become a great rooster and loves the babies. Autumn is a fabulous momma and Ash tolerates her child but not exactly everyone else's lol. I am sad to say that I lost the black zombie chick to a snake this week. I have reinforced the coop but these black snakes have been my biggest predator issue. The black roo chick is cochin bantam (will be looking for a new coop) and the white one is a zombie chick from my couple Magic the Cemani rooster and Prissy the Zombie hen. Autumn was nice enough to hatch them for me. Don't tell her that's not her baby πŸ˜‚ πŸ’œπŸ₯ Love watching them raise their babies πŸ₯°

These boys are so pretty and so silly. Trying to decide which to put with my mixed flock. I really want to keep them both but not sure if I have enough hens for that. I love to watch these guys play rooster games and learn to c**k a doodle doo. πŸ’œπŸ“πŸ“

Gotta get better pics but this is my first Zombie chick from my own stock. She's getting her spots and I love her black tail feather. I call them all girls because well wishful thinking πŸ€” 😬 That black one is a Zombie too but we will see how it turns out. Roo is Ayam Cemani and hen is Zombie. I hope it gets that pretty iridescent look like the rooster. Pic of parents included.
