Puddlehaven Kona won Grand Champion and Best Udder as a 2 year old first freshener, at only one month fresh! šŸ˜®šŸ„³šŸŽ‰šŸŽŠ

Friday was a very busy, very stressful day for me and I seriously considered not going to the show on Saturday. I felt unprepared. Nyx kidded 3 days early (I’ll post about that tomorrow) and was occupying the kidding pen…which is the only place I have to separate kids from their dams. There would be no 12 hour separation to allow udders to fill before the show. Astra, who is normally very well behaved, has been completely untouchable since she kidded a week ago. I hadn’t had an opportunity to trim her feet let alone milk her yet.

Saturday morning I tried a Hail Mary with cattle panels and was able to trap Astra in a corner and catch her. After a very hurried udder trim and hoof trim, I loaded her in the trailer with Cayenne and Kona and crossed my fingers their udders would fill enough to look ok by the time they entered the ring 3 hours later. I also brought yearlings Ginger and Sonata for the experience.

After we arrived at the fairgrounds, everyone was settled into their pen, and I had a chance to chat with acquaintances, I was really glad I decided to go. This show has a very laid-back vibe and everyone is friendly and helpful and it’s always fun talking goats to other goat people!

šŸ„‡ Astra won her class (4 year olds) both times.

Cayenne (3 year olds) finished in the middle of her class both times.

šŸ† Kona (2 year olds) placed second in the first ring and then first in the second ring…and went on to win Grand Champion and Best Udder! I could hardly believe it! I knew she looked good but I wasn’t expecting any ribbons until she was 3 or 4!

Ginger (yearling) finished in the middle in both rings and Sonata (yearling) finished last. Evora’s line tends to be awkwardly gangly until they’re 2 years old so I’m not surprised. Hopefully they will blossom like Kona next year!

He’s a big boy!

Astra kidded an enormous single buckling on Friday. I missed the whole thing in between barn cam checks. Astra was calmly munching hay on one check, no signs of anything happening anytime soon, and then half an hour later there was an almost completely dried off kid toddling around the pen. Good job Astra!

I was really hoping to keep a doeling from this pairing but alas, that was not my luck this year. This adorable boy is available as a wether.

Moonstone surprised me last week by going into labor 4 days early. She was due today but the kids made their exit on Thursday! Unfortunately it wasn’t an easy birth.

Moonstone pushed and pushed and pushed, but when time kept passing and no kids appeared, I went in to check. There was a kid pressed right up against the opening but I couldn’t tell which part of it I was feeling. Definitely not a nose or toes which should be the first body parts to exit. With much effort on both our parts, I freed the right leg and shoulder. But I couldn’t figure out where the head was. My hand ached and I was frustrated and growing increasingly desperate so I reached out to my vet. Thankfully she was available so I made a late night drive to her house. Moonstone received an epidural and then Dr. Jackson went to work and eventually freed the stuck kid. He unfortunately didn’t make it, but his two siblings were still alive and well and they were brought into this world by a gloved hand. Thank you Central Kentucky Small Ruminant Veterinary Services LLC for saving Moonstone and two of her kids!

Both kids are reserved.

Luna gave birth to two normal sized buckling and one teeny tiny buckling on Sunday. This is her first time being a mom and she seemed very confused at first but she eventually caught on and is doing a fantastic job now. I was really worried about the smallest boy - Was he underdeveloped? Would he have the strength to stand? To nurse? Was he going to be a bottle baby?

Puck is totally fine! He’s less than half the size of his brothers (Oberon and Cupid) but has just as much s***k as they do and can take care of himself just fine. 🄳

Puck is reserved but Oberon and Cupid are still available as wethers.

Side note - does anyone know which planet’s moons the boys are named after?

Second milk test of the year!

I like to do these tests 3-4 weeks apart but with everything going on in my life right now, this test ended up being a little over 5 weeks after the first. Oops!

There was very little change in weights and butterfat between this test and the first test - I’m proud of all my does for holding steady! Cayenne was the biggest surprise. She’s a lovely goat but I was never terribly impressed with her udder. This year she had quads and the milk she needs to feed them finally filled out her udder. She looks fantastic!

GiGi gave birth to an ENORMOUS buckling and a normal sized doeling last week. With an audience! A customer had stopped by to pick up her doeling and as we were standing around in the barn chatting, she looked over at the kidding pen and noticed GiGi was pushing. Surprise! Talk about timing!

It took quite a while to get Finn out, even though he was positioned correctly, just because his head was so big. GiGi is a first freshener and is a little on the smaller side. Finn’s sister Fiona all but flew out shortly after he finally got out of the way. Good job GiGi! It was hard work but you’re a mom now!

Both Finn and Fiona are reserved.

Kona gave birth to four adorable kids last week! This is her first freshening and although she appeared startled by the bleating little creatures when they first appeared, she figured out how to be a mom fairly quickly and is doing a fantastic job now. She also has a really nice looking udder.

These are F2 Mini-LaManchas and all four kids are available. The two doelings will be registered with MDGA and the two bucklings will be wethered. These kids are line-bred on Evora and will hopefully be super stars just like her.

There’s nothing quite like the joy of baby goats figuring out what their legs can do. Bounce bounce zooooom!
