If you can't decide between a green or gold kiwi, I would pick out a gold one. They are more sweet and don't have the bite that the green ones do, definitely my favorite. Looking for an easy way to eat one? Hold it in your hand, use a spoon to make a hole in the top and eat it right out of the skin, no cutting needed. Just do it over the sink since they are so juicy!

Some fun new fall treats just made it onto the shelves. The pumpkin spice cookies from Rustic Bakery are tasty (I sampled them and they would be really good with some cream cheese frosting on top), and the Belgian macaroons from Poppies are delicious (sampled these too).

We also just picked up fresh organic produce from Alaska Air so that is headed out onto shelves this morning. Today is a great day to stop in, browse what's new and pick out your kiwi! Ordering online? Let us know in the order notes which kiwi you'd like :)

Happy Tuesday!

Green, gold or berry? Come find your favorite at our kiwi tasting today!

Did you know one gold kiwi has about 131 mg of vitamin C? That's 145% of a day's worth and about twice what an orange has. This time of year, we need all the vitamin C we can get.

Want an extra boost? Eat the skin too. Gold kiwi skin is thin and smooth, and leaving it on adds more fiber, 34% more folate and 32% more vitamin E. All three kiwis are 20% off through Saturday. Let's give our immune systems a little extra this week!

New from Jonathan: Pear Cardamom Cake. His second Torta Bolzano is the same soft, custardy Italian-style cake as his apple version, made this time with pears and a warm hint of cardamom. This one is a 10/10. Find it in the grab-and-go case.

It's Friday, so everything made in our kitchen is 10% off today, and Jonathan made two new things yesterday!

The first is our Smoky Garbanzo Mezze. Garbanzo beans are tossed with tomatoes, red bell peppers, cucumbers, green onion, parsley and dill, seasoned with smoked paprika and a little garam masala. It's topped with fresh made tzatziki, feta and parsley. It's hearty enough for lunch on its own, and it's great scooped up with the new Go Raw crisps. Even though I'm normally a sweets person, this was my favorite between the two new things.

The second is a little slice of fall: our new Apple Cake, inspired by the apple cakes of Bolzano in northern Italy. It's soft and custardy, full of apples, with butter and a bit of lemon zest. Perfect with an afternoon coffee or tea.

We're unpacking fresh organic produce today, so if you stop in and something you'd like isn't stocked yet, please let us know and we can grab it for you from the back. Everything is loaded onto the website, though, so if you're ordering online, you're good to go!

Pick out a Flavor Treat pluot on us today! 💜

You might remember these from our purple produce lineup. With deep purple skin and golden flesh that's sweet and juicy, they really live up to the name Flavor Treat! They're the last pluots we'll have this year, so this is our way of sending off summer fruit season! Nectarines are already finished and we have a few final peaches left.

In case you were wondering what a pluot is, it looks and tastes a lot like a plum. Pluots were developed by Floyd Zaiger, a California fruit tree grower who crossed plums and apricots over many generations. Most of the family tree is plum (about 75%). Like plums, they bring vitamin C, fiber and potassium. That dark skin gets its color from anthocyanins, the same plant pigments in the rest of our purple produce.

We just restocked lots of groceries, so today's a great day to stop in for a complimentary cup of hot coffee and a pluot and browse what's back in stock. Our apple tasting sale is still going too. Ribston Pippin, SweeTango, Rockit and Gold Delicious are 20% off through Saturday.

Come Taste the Season with Us!

Today we are sampling some delicious apples! Apple season is in full swing and we picked four very different ones for you to try. When you try them side by side the flavor differences really shine through.

Ribston Pippin is the old soul of the group! An heirloom apple, it first grew in Yorkshire, England in 1708 from a seed sent over from Normandy. It's firm and sweet with a flavor that's almost like a pear.

SweeTango is a University of Minnesota cross of Honeycrisp and Zestar. It has that big Honeycrisp crunch with a flavor reminiscent of brown sugar and spiced c***r.

Rockit apples were developed in New Zealand over about 20 years of careful crossing to get a small apple with big flavor. Sweet and crunchy, they're the perfect size for lunchboxes and after-school snacks.

Gold Delicious started as a single tree on a West Virginia hillside in 1912 and is now that state's official fruit. Mellow and sweet, great for baking and applesauce.

If you're out and about today, stop in for a sample and maybe you'll find a new favorite! If you're busy, all four are on sale through Saturday.

Happy Sunday!

Fresh organic produce landed yesterday and the produce section is vibrant with color today! We always try to eat a variety of colors, because each color of produce brings its own mix of vitamins, minerals and plant compounds. This week, we're celebrating purple! Purple produce gets its color from anthocyanins, natural pigments that act as antioxidants. They're the same pigments you'll find in blueberries and blackberries.

We have a new sandwich in the case today! The Smoked Turkey Veggie takes everything you love about our Fancy Veggie and adds True Story’s new smoked turkey. It’s built on our sourdough with Tillamook Jack cheese, Juneau Greens romaine, Sprout About clover sprouts, Habiza hummus, Seed & Mill tahini, and organic tomato, cucumber, and red onion. I had one yesterday and it was amazing!

The infamous Heirloom Inferno salsa is finally back after a long break. Every batch is made with a full pound of fresh habaneros! We had to wait for habanero peppers to come back in season, but it’s ready for you now. We’ll be making a mild salsa here soon for those of us who don’t love extra spicy.

And we have two new things for you to try this weekend: sparkling sodas from ARMRA and truffle bars from Magic Chocolate. The truffle bars come in minis, so they’re the perfect after-lunch treat.

We’re also picking up fresh produce this morning, so it’s a great day to stop in and say hi!

Happy Friday!

Apple season is here in force! We have so many varieties arriving later this week but today you can try a fresh Fiesta apple on us. Fiesta apples come from a cross of Cox's Orange Pippin (pictured above) and Idared, out of the East Malling research station in England, where they also go by Red Pippin. They're sweet, a little nutty and taste like a fall day at a U-pick. I really enjoy them with the Sierra Nevada Raw Cheddar.

Eat the peel! A medium apple with the skin on has about 4 grams of fiber, close to twice what you get from a peeled one, and roughly 15% of a day's worth. A good share of that is pectin, the soluble fiber that makes jelly set. You also get potassium and a little vitamin C. If you're looking for a fun breakfast, grate one into your favorite yogurt, cottage cheese or oatmeal.

Alvarado Street bagels are back today, along with Nancy's and Good Culture cottage cheese, Maple Hill yogurt and a long list of other things that were out of stock last week. Kiwi berries are also 20% off through Saturday if you missed Sunday's sampling.
