Feature Wednesday!
Red Shiso or Shiso Britton!
Shiso Britton is in the mint family, it thrives best on your countertop in water! With flavors of mint, basil, cinnamon and anise/licorice. You might have had it in a cocktail at the Narrows earlier this year! Shiso Britton has lots of antioxidants like anthocyanins, romantic acid and flavonoids, which help give it its purple underside!💜
It’s also rich in vitamins A, C, K, calcium and iron! How cool!!
Uses: Throw it in a salad, use as garnish, a wrap for sushi/sashimi or you can make it into a simple syrup!
Simple Syrup recipe:
What you need
• 1 cup of water
• 1 cup of white sugar
• 10-15 leaves
Steps!
1) Dissolve the sugar: Combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of white sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Heat and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
2) Steep the shiso: Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the fresh, washed Shiso Britton leaves to the hot syrup.
3) Infuse: Place a lid on the pan (or let it sit off-heat) and allow the leaves to steep and infuse for about 4 hours (or down to 15–30 minutes for a lighter flavor).
4) Strain and store: Pour the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve or strainer into a clean glass bottle or jar, pressing gently on the leaves to extract extra flavor.
5) Refrigerate: Seal tightly and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
