Eric Fleming encountered these H. hilonis individuals while diving here on big island! We are so happy to hear whenever people see seahorses in the wild, and we are hopeful that these ones may have come from one of our native species releases 🫧

Meet our pregnant male Hippocampus hilonis!

This species is endemic to Hawaii and very endangered.
When he has his babies, we will raise them up big and strong and release them into the wild. We’ve been hearing reports recently of people seeing seahorses at the same spots we’ve been releasing them, so this is a good sign that they are surviving after release :)

This seahorse can give birth to up to 2000 fry at a time! We want to give him a name that reflects our appreciation for all the work he does 🩵

And we want you to help us!

We will be taking name suggestions over the next few weeks, and then voting on your favorite.

To submit a name, please make a contribution of $5 or more to the Seahorse Hawai’i Foundation (link in our bio or seahorsehawaii.org) and write your name suggestion in the “additional notes” section.

We look forward to hearing your ideas!

Do these eyes look familiar? 👀

Seahorses have eyes like a chameleon that can move independently from each other. They also have skin instead of regular fish scales. And similar to a chameleon again, their skin has chromatophores that can change color. This is super helpful to us on the farm, because we can gauge the health and happiness of our animals based on how vibrant their colors are!

Thank you to all our supporters for helping us after the storm! We were able to replace the shade cloths with a steel roof that will be much more reliable in protecting our animals going forward💙
