We are having a very active Hurricane Season.
Hurricane Nolo grew stronger Thursday night and is moving toward the Big Island, bringing the possibility of “catastrophic and life-threatening” flash flooding into the weekend, forecasters said. Nolo has been classified as a CAT 4 Hurricane.
At 11 p.m., Nolo had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and centered 240 miles south of South Point and 430 miles south-southeast of Honolulu. It was moving north-northeast at 5 mph. Hurricane-force winds of 74 mph or more extend up to 40 miles from the center and tropical storm-force winds extend 105 miles out, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
“A turn toward the west-northwest and west with an increase in forward speed is forecast Saturday and Sunday. On the forecast track, the center of Nolo will remain well south of the main Hawaiian islands,” forecasters said.
A hurricane watch and tropical storm warning for Hawaii Island remain in effect, as does the tropical storm watch for Maui County. A flood watch is in effect until Saturday afternoon for the Big Island and Maui County.
Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin Friday on Hawaii Island, with hurricane conditions possible on Saturday, especially in areas of steep terrain, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
We are hopeful the eye of the Hurricane will continue to move South of the Big Island. However, we know from Hurricane Lala that a hurricane's outer bands can cause massive destruction. 🌺🌴
