Quick rest after lambing and we began the push to set up our summer grazing program. Fortunately we have some wonderful neighbors that like the benefits of sheep w**d and feed managed fields. We cannot thank them enough. First we set up the rams complex of a temporary perimeter , subdivided by 3 strand wind up poly wire and step in posts. Movable water troughs and mineral boxes move with them. The ewes and lambs is similar but much larger. We were able to open that Saturday. In each case the flock eats the top of the grass 2-5 days, depending on grass conditions, and we move to next cell of about 100 x 250 ft. There is a hot, very dry summer predicted, despite our wet spring. We will be taking extra care to leave the grass a little deeper this year to keep soil cool. Managed grazing goes a long way toward improving soil conditions which is the foundation for supporting grass health. The better our sheep eat, the better our wool. Everyone comes home across the road to safety each night. The mothers did a great job of getting their lambs to destinations without trouble. The lambs learned that the fence will bite if you touch it, Notes taken. They did great all day. With the wet spring we have plenty of grass at home but we needed to move out as our covercrops are sprouting up on our pastures . Next post.
