Many guests ask about the round port on the side of a couple of our cows.
This is called a rumen cannula, and it was placed while these cows were part of a university veterinary and nutrition program. We purchased two of these cows when the program no longer needed them and gave them a permanent home here on our farm.
The cannula provides access to the rumen, which is the cow’s largest stomach compartment. Universities use cannulated cows to study nutrition, digestion, and animal health, helping veterinarians and farmers improve cow care and feeding practices.
Despite how unusual it may look, these cows can live normal, healthy lives. They graze, socialize with the herd, enjoy pasture, and do all the normal cow things. The cannula does not bother them, and they continue to be valued members of our herd.
