There has always been intention in my food. There's energy. There's a theme. There's a lot of love. I started creating for people out of necessity. A sister-in-law who was diagnosed at a very young age with celiac disease, cancer patients, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and also lifestyle choices. My friend, Deb Terrill encouraged me to write food related essays. I was thinking today about how Anthony Bourdain used food not just as nourishment, but as a universal language to connect cultures, dismantle prejudice, and reveal the shared humanity of people around the globe. No pretenses. So I'm speaking from the heart. Whether it is catering a yoga retreat with a four elements theme, or making charcuterie boards with a Practical Magic theme, or just deciding that because someone gifted me some amazing Indian takeout that my chili for my private clients needs to have a healing element. As I am putting the dried chilies in and warm spices such as masala, coriander, cumin, harissa, and Saigon cinnamon. I puréed roasted acorn squash and sweet potato into the sauce for extra nutrients. I also put in some love and gratitude for the gifted food that saved me on a busy day yesterday. Sometimes when I am exhausted and feeling pulled in many different directions I tell my clients that their food won't be ready today. I don't want that kind of energy going in to their food. I will go home and rest and come back the next day within intention, gratitude, and the kind of energy that they deserve. They all have stories. A diagnosis, the death of a spouse, the loss of a child... but it's their story to tell. I am going to tell you how I help them heal. And it starts with a simple bowl of chili. 🫶
