Shoeless Acres

Shoeless Acres We are a family of eight that moved from downtown living to farm living near the city. Shoeless Acres is a small family farm in Kansas City, MO.

We are dedicated to raising real food – food we feed our family – in a natural environment, with focus on sustainability and ethical animal husbandry. From day one, we’ve focused on raising and consuming animals that live and graze freely as their instincts guide them. Happy, healthy animals means healthy food straight from our farm to your table. Our journey to becoming a family farm started in t

he city – where we cultivated a love and passion for farm-to-table foods. As our family grew and grew, downtown life became quickly cramped. Our search for space led us to an absolute gem of a property, right here in Kansas City. Shoeless Acres gets its name from the fact our children rarely wear shoes around the farm! We love offering our guests the same freedom – in a place where you can kick off your shoes and escape the city rush in peace. What started as a small adventure in raising chickens for our own personal consumption quickly became so much more. Along with an expanding vegetable garden and growing orchard, we added a herd of homestead pigs – the KuneKune. Pronounced, “cooney cooney,” their name means “fat & round” in the Maori language of New Zealand where they originate. KuneKunes are a small but hearty breed that deliver a meat many chefs consider to be outstanding. Bred for flavor rather than yield, our herd is small. But that allows us to give them so much more love and attention – a considerable difference you can clearly taste. We are dedicated to the preservation of this breed by only selling registered quality breeding stock. As we grow our herd, we are excited to continue introducing our community to healthy and delicious, ultra-premium pastured pork.

Dordogne decided 9 piglets would be a good addition to the farm this past weekend. Sadly, we lost the smallest one. Thankfully, it has been oddly warm for us, and the other 8 are doing great.

Yesterday, we soaked up all the sunshine. Kids in shorts in February is crazy!!! Here are some pics and fun baby goat video that we thought we'd share. Baby goats are the best entertainment. ❤

We will hope to sell a few piglets that stand out. We are very excited about both of these litters as we have been diligently working on selecting great pork breeding stock. Let me know if you are interested or have any questions.

After a very long season of no babies on the farm, we turned a corner and are having baby palooza over here. A common lesson we have learned is planning usually doesn't work how we would have thought.
We don't love the time of year for tiny babies, but very thankful that so far everyone is doing well! Thankful for heat lamps and good mommas!

Piglets came on a very cold night. Adam and I took turns getting up about every two hours to check on them and make sure they were staying warm and eating. We realized we are too old for a newborn at our ages. 😂

We have one more sow due soon. Our spring has started a little early.
Enjoy some baby piglet and goat pics. ❤

Finally, rendering some of our pastured pork into lard and making soap. I'm working on stocking up for the first time in a while and thought I would see if anyone was interested in soap this year?

Simple ingredients (lard, organic coconut oil, lye) and essential oils for scent. Bars are $6 and I can ship for larger orders.
Send me a text or message if you want me to include you in my numbers.

Also, yes that is a baby goat in the house. Due to series of unfortunate events, the kids have adopted the goat as their own and he thinks they are his people as well. Never a dull moment over here!

Now, watching the game. Go chiefs!
(We love them even though they are not the best this year 😬).

Because why not, we got 50 meat birds to raise for us and some friends.
They are already on pasture because 47 (we lost 3) outgrew the barn much quicker. 🤣

That pic of T about sums up his style in all things….gotta love him!

So far they are doing great! Adam and I did get a very early workout in as we ran out to the run at 4:50 this morning to add another tarp. After a month of dry and hot, we finally got some great rain this morning. No complaints! We are very thankful for the rain.

Never a dull moment over here!

Canned the last of our peaches this season.

Adam planted the trees 5 1/2 years ago. Today, he helped me can. I told him he was an odd one because not too many men would want to can with their wives. He said it was exciting to see the finished product that started 5 1/2 years ago.

He’s the best partner in this adventure! ❤️

Today did not go as we would have hoped. Dordogne farrowed early this morning. She did a good job, but out of 6 piglets 4 were stillborn. This was a first for us. Always learning how little control we have over things. Thankful to know the One who is control of all things and we rest in His perfect plans.

These two little ones are doing great. Momma is also recovering well. So far we are amazed out how gentle and great she is doing with these piglets. Praying that continues!
