This weekend we prepared our future grape block 5! After chemically burning the area a week ago, we went to work using two tractors, flail mower, tiller, deep ripper and seeder.

During harvest season one of the most important activities is measuring three primary chemical readings for the grapes: pH, Tartaric Acid, and Brix. In simple terms, these readings indicate the acid strength, how tart/sour is the grape, and how much sugar is in the grape respectfully. For the chemistry people out there, our Chambourcin numbers: 3.45 pH, 0.80% TA, 23.0 Brix. And our St. Vincent numbers: 3.40 pH, 0.70% TA, 20.9 Brix.

So what do these numbers mean? The grapes are telling us it's time to harvest!

We slightly modified the design to better stabilize the piping on the trailer which allows us to drape the netting with only two people: tractor driver and one person directing and spreading out the netting.
