Welcome to URBAVORE in east Kansas City - one of the nations largest, most diversified urban farmsteads - a living, breathing organism that both feeds from and provides food for its urban surroundings. Born in 2011, URBAVORE is working to create and “edible oasis” that brings organic growth, sustainable life, and creative solutions to a city neighborhood. The farm uses “Beyond Organic” practices to produce heirloom vegetables, culinary/medicinal herbs, and edible flowers noted for their unique appearance and extraordinary flavor. The fruitful future of URBAVORE holds much more than annual vegetables:

Farmers, Brooke Salvaggio and Dan Heryer (aka the “Badseeds”), are hard at work creating a wholly sustainable, off-grid farmstead that includes an organic orchard, vineyard, heritage livestock, and alternative infrastructure. Awesome monarch tagging training with KC citizen scientist Maria today on the farm. Sol was an absolute rockstar and caught about 80% of the monarchs we tagged. It was surprisingly easy, even though I had many reservations about harming the butterflies in the process. We’ll integrate tagging into Monarch Fest next year!!🦋🤘🌈

This is BIG for us!!! And will hopefully be a total GAME CHANGER if we can find the right individual, couple, or family!...

This is BIG for us!!! And will hopefully be a total GAME CHANGER if we can find the right individual, couple, or family!! To date, we’ve struggled mightily to build this farm and compost hub from scratch - giving up all manner of life balance and personal care. We’ve reached a point where we can no longer sustain the load without skilled help in the management of this unique & complex ecosystem. Creating a wage for such a position is incredibly difficult (as mom and pop farms like ours have very slim profit margins and often rely on the owners “doing it all” at any cost to keep going). That has to change for us, and we are excited to move into a new chapter!! PLEASE help us spread the word about this wonderful opportunity. We encourage out of state applicants, and can provide affordable housing in the neighborhood.♻️🌈🦋

Saturday night monarch watching. They love this group of asters I have growing wild near our hobbit home. We are hosting a monarch tagging training tomorrow on the farm for a few farm employees and Compost Collective KC crew. It’s the little things in life, eh? A card. A sticker. A statement. Although I no longer talk about it on socials (for reasons I won’t go into), our troubles have never really dissipated entirely. We won the “big battle” and “saved the farm” so to speak, but existential threats are still coming at us from hateful places and powers that my soul has trouble comprehending. I was preparing for a meeting this morning to discuss some of these threats when “despair” simply overcame me and I started to feel anxious and overwhelmingly hopeless - that feeling you get right before you say “ah f**k it, I’m done fighting…I give up!”. But then Dan walked into the room and said “oh yeah, I forgot to give you this card”. It was from a school group I had recently worked with. It wasn’t a big deal or anything…I get cards all the time from the kids/teachers we engage with, but something about the sticker and the timing was just SO poignant and necessary!! It snapped me out of my despair, and I got my farming boots on and headed to the field. My mission again was clear: grow, share, love, compost, do it again. And when the day is over, have a glass of w**e with Kaiser in the food forest and watch the sun set over the fruits of your labor. Breathe.🧘 They can take away the farm…but they can’t kill my spirit nor squash my skills and abilities!!!🦋🌈 In fact, they need me more than I need them. After all, I have the knowledge of sustenance and regeneration…I grow food…give life!! What a gift!🙏

This guy ought to be our official farm model, eh?! Had a great time yesterday with freshman and senior DeLaSalle High School students. I gave them a tour of the farm with a particular emphasis on pasture-raised poultry. Some of these students will be designing a chicken coop with Build Trybe as part of their school farm program!! How cool is that? You may not know this, but Urbavore does not receive funding for the free educational tours and activities we facilitate for community youth. We work with many schools, and our time and resources are given free of charge. This is only sustainable for us IF we work our butts off around the clock and sell the fruits of our labor effectively. When you purchase food from us, you are not only receiving delicious, nutrient-dense calories at a fair price, you are investing in your community youth and helping to expose all type of urban kids to real food and regenerative ecosystems. Sales are down y’all!!! It’s that time of year when farmers begin to struggle as the enthusiasm for fresh produce wanes when summer ends and the kids go back to school.🥲 At the same time, school tours are starting up and I find myself dedicating a lot of time out of my farming schedule.🤔 Happy to do it, but felt a “gentle reminder” to all you would-be eaters was worthwhile!💕 There aren’t a lot of businesses out there that give back to their communities in the same we do. I’m taking a few moments to reflect on the season and specifically Monarch Fest which was such a HUGE accomplishment for our small team of farmers and composters!!⁣

Photos and praise for the event keep rolling in (like these first few taken by my neighbor who also happens to be a badass graffiti artist!!) *I see a Monarch Mural on the compost bays in her future, eh?🦋🤘⁣

The photos of this stunning couple really sum up the event for me: sheer joy, love, vivid colors, diverse humans, and outrageous blooms!! ⁣

Only at Urbavore will you find folks from ALL walks of life jiving together in celebration of butterflies and the sacred soil that connects us! Political differences, religious differences, discrimination, and all manner of biases seem to fly out the window (and into the landfill😉) when diverse people come together on this 13-acre urban oasis. And that’s about the only thing that goes in the landfill because we responsibly compost everything else😂 to grow more diverse life that nourishes our wonderfully diverse community of people & pollinators!! ⁣

After our horrendous run with the City (a multi-year saga fueled by hate and “nimbyism” that almost cost us our livelihood) Monarch Fest is a beacon of hope and a glimpse into the possibilities of holistic community in action.🥰⁣

The Cyanotype & U-Pick flower photos specifically were taken by jes. They are some of my favorites! The U-Pick was such a success that I’ve expanded it to every Thursday evening during our produce distribution. Stop by between 4 and 7pm. For $13 you get a recycled coffee can and snips and get to wander the fields, cramming your cup full of blooms!!💐

You know it’s Fall when the broomcorn stands 20 feet tall, and the sweet potatoes are finally getting dug!!🍠😎 We’ll be back at Downtown LS Farmers Market tomorrow from 8 to noon. I am making some killer fall bouquets with this crazy-ass broomcorn as well as individual bundles so you too can have fun crafting autumn decor too! It’s such a BEAUTIFUL day y’al!!! If you haven’t been outside yet, get off that damn screen and get yo self some vitamin D!! This is what I live for as a farmer. Hellish summer marathons so I can experience a handful of delicious days like this!!🙏 Oh and the last few slides picture blooms I harvested for a country style wedding this morning. The family is making their own arrangements. I had so much fun matching the brides colors of tan, pink, and deep crimson!!💐

Gorgeous food and flowers in the online store this week! Head to the link in profile to place your orders by midnight. And guess what??? The monarchs have officially arrived!!🦋🌈🤩 Dozens of them were gliding about while I harvested flowers. They are especially fond of the Amazon Celosia. *The one pictured (crawling on my hand) just hatched today!! I only knew to check up on her because one of our amazing Monarch Fest goers took a picture of the chrysalis on the electric fencing of the pig pasture!! Ever since I saw the photo, I’ve been checking on it daily. I never would have noticed it myself! Good thing too…because this little butterfly was stuck in a spider web upon hatching and I was able to free here!!🙏

Wowsa!! The crew is recovering after an AMAZINGLY EPIC Monarch Fest🦋 with close to 700 participants!! And while we’d all like to drop dead from fatigue😵…the show must go on!! We are harvesting up a storm of nutrient-dense food and flowers for pre-order at the link in profile. Orders must be placed TODAY (Wednesday) by midnight. Pick-up is at the urban farm from 4-7 pm on Thursday!! I’ve heard from a handful of folks that they were super bummed to miss the festivities!! No worries! You can still wander the flower fields and food forest, visit the baby chicks and piggies, and spot butterflies on any given Thursday evening during our produce distribution. Just swing by between 4 and 7 pm. *We even have U-pick flowers available as an activity for purchase on the online store. Bring your friends and maybe some libations🍻and have your own farm fresh happy hour. The weather is just too darn GLORIOUS to pass up such a unique opportunity!!😎🌈♻️ I’ll be giving a full recap of Monarch Fest with wicked photos in subsequent posts.
