RBAVORE in east Kansas City - one of the nations largest, most diversified urban farmsteads - a living, breathing organism that both feeds from and provides food for its urban surroundings. Born in 2011, URBAVORE is working to create and “edible oasis” that brings organic growth, sustainable life, and creative solutions to a city neighborhood. The farm uses “Beyond Organic” practices to produce heirloom vegetables, culinary/medicinal herbs, and edible flowers noted for their unique appearance and extraordinary flavor. The fruitful future of URBAVORE holds much more than annual vegetables:

Farmers, Brooke Salvaggio and Dan Heryer (aka the “Badseeds”), are hard at work creating a wholly sustainable, off-grid farmstead that includes an organic orchard, vineyard, heritage livestock, and alternative infrastructure. This 13.5 acre farm is but 7 miles from the BADSEED downtown storefront. I’m detecting some serious fall vibes despite the 98 degree temps!!😅🍂 Winter squash is officially in season and will hit CSA Shares this week! *Not pictured in these shares were packing for Monday morning delivery is bountiful bunches of Sweet Italian Basil which somehow seems so out of place with the fall colors. But that’s the beauty of late summer! The smorgasbord of seasonal eating is represented in many colors and forms and far-out flavors!! It’s truly mesmerizing to behold the many manifestations of the earth. After nearly 20 years of growing, I still witness miracles every single day!!😎🦋🌈 The food you see here is grown on a 13-acre urban farm that takes in large quantities of residential food waste and turns it into the most fantastic fertilizer on earth (aka compost) to produce nutrient-dense food that is sent right back to the very folks who contribute the waste. This is KC’s first and only closed loop food system, and you’ll be hard pressed to find anything else like it in the entire country!! That said, we think we’re on to something and hope that someday ALL food waste is funneled to industrious organic farming operations to be recycled into local nourishment: farm to table and table to farm.♻️ What do you think? I played with “pastels” today and all sorts of shimmering blooms. By hour 10 I’d reverted back to big and bold colors. Thursdays are my bouquet-making marathon days. I start with coffee, and 12 hours later I end with beer😂 and sunsets in the food forest with Kaiser. These blooms are headed to Downtown LS Farmers Market on Saturday. Don’t miss out!💐🦋💖

The worst part about being a farmer is being TOO DANG BUSY to preserve the harvest and enjoy the fruits of your labor! When we began this farming venture, we’d stay up all night canning maters no matter how tired we were and make sure we had a full supply to last us through winter. We NEVER bought a single tomato product!! Nowadays, we are too burnt-out to pull the all-nighters. The energy of our twenty-something selves is long gone, but we hate to see these fruits go to waste! Help us preserve the harvest and reap the benefits yourself! Details in the slides.🙏
