Our second set of ewes being joined with our Australian White/Katahdin ram Apollo. He is 75% Australian White and 25% Katahdin. Look for his lambs to hit the ground late January 2027.

Our second group of ewes are one week away from the 2026 breeding season. Today we replenished the mineral feeders and continued the flushing process. These ewes will be bred to a F2 Australian White ram.

Moving ewes to the barn yard to introduce the ram through fence line separation. This will get the ewes to start cycling. We do this to get them through their 1st heat which is called silent heat. The ram will be put with this set of ewes in 17 days.

These ewes have also been receiving whole corn and soybean meal for flushing. Nutritional flushing serves as a purposeful management strategy to boost ovulation, conception, and embryo implantation rates in ewes. By increasing the plane of nutrition around breeding time, producers aim to improve the total number of lambs born, which is a primary driver of overall flock profitability. Our goal here is to increase our lambing rate by 10-20%.

The ram effect acts through the hypothalamus-hypophyseal system to trigger gonadotrophin release, which brings ewes into ovulation more rapidly than those kept in total isolation. While this synchronization is valuable for grouping lambing dates, it does not typically elevate the frequency of twin births unless specific nutritional or genetic factors are also addressed.
