Cold weather is doing the work now… so fall can bring the color 🍎❄️

Here in Wisconsin, our apples haven’t formed just yet—but the process has already begun. Those chilly nights and sunny days are setting the stage for the vibrant reds and rich flavors you’ll see come harvest season.

It’s all about the weather:
❄️ Cold nights slow things down
☀️ Sunny days build sugars
🍎 And together, they create the color and taste you love

So while the orchard may look quiet now, nature is hard at work behind the scenes—preparing for a beautiful, flavorful fall.

Sprangers Orchard has officially started pruning.

Cutting back the old to make space for what’s next—one branch at a time. 🌱
And with these odd little hints of spring from Mother Nature, the crew doesn’t seem to mind the extra fresh air. 😌

As we prep for the off-season at Sprangers Orchard, we’re anything but idle. We’ve planted over 1,000 new trees for the 2026 season—bringing the orchard to 2,500 trees total.

This expansion includes several varieties that are brand new to us: Fuji, Triumph, Pink Lady, Kudos, Winecrisp, Frostbite, Prairie Magic, and Haralson. We also added more of the classics you already love, including Autumn Crisp, Cortland, and McIntosh.

These new varieties will be available for our 2031 season, but don’t fret—we still have plenty of established apple trees to keep us going while these babies grow.

Orchards are more than rows of trees—they’re living landscapes built on patience, stewardship, and generations of care. They preserve local agriculture, protect open land, and connect people back to the rhythms of the seasons in a way grocery store shelves never can.

When you support a local orchard, you’re supporting fresh, in-season fruit, sustainable growing practices, and the farmers who wake up before sunrise to tend the land. But here’s the insider secret: if you love Honeycrisp, there are moments in the season where other apples actually shine brighter.

Early season – Zestar
Bright, juicy, and refreshing with a clean crunch. Zestar is the apple that wakes your palate up and kicks the season off strong. Less heavy than Honeycrisp, but just as satisfying when it’s fresh.

A new year, a quiet orchard, and a whole lot to look forward to.

As we step into this next season, we can’t help but think about what makes this place feel like home—crisp fall days, the pumpkin wall stacked just right, getting lost in the corn maze, and that first sip of apple cider slushie that somehow tastes like childhood and sunshine all at once.

Winter is our pause. Spring is our promise.
