I got a puppy back spring 2016. Bash. Due to my personal life turning upside down I ended up rehoming him when he was 9 months old.
July 14, 2018 I get a call from the shelter “we have your dog” I told them I rehomed him, but his chip was still registered to me. So I took him home, contacted the women I rehomed him to. Never heard back. I was now in a better place and able to keep Bash.
Fast forward July 14, 2026. I get a call from the shelter.
“We have your dog” me -“no you don’t, I’m looking at him” the shelter asked if I could come down and take a look. I get there, and it’s Bash’s doppelgänger. The shelter insist that his chip is registered to me. And I either have to take him home or surrender him.
This dog is in rough shape. Limping, whining, and has a huge lump on his leg. I decide there is no way I’m leaving him in the shelter over the weekend in the condition he’s in. So he comes home with me.
I post in all the lost and found groups, at this point I don’t have the women’s contact info that I rehomed “bash” because I already have bash.
The poor shelter dog is in a lot of pain. So I take him to the ER Vet late Friday to figure out what’s going on with his leg. I’m hoping it’s an injury and fairly simple to heal.
It’s not. It’s osteosarcoma. A very aggressive and painful cancer. The ER vet recommended euthanasia then. But with the weird circumstances, we chose to get him pain management for a few days and hope we can find his owner.
As of this afternoon no one had claimed him still, so I made the hard decision to euthanize him, as the pain management was still not enough to keep him comfortable.
I still don’t know which dog is the puppy I got 10 years ago. My best tin foil hat guess is that a timeline converged and they are both him. Especially since I got the call the exact same day 8 years later.
OG Bash is happy and safe in our home still, and Imposter Bash was loved and spoiled the few days he was with us, and I now no longer in pain.
