Afro-Fusion: Plant-Based, But Africa Isn’t Culturally Vegan!
When people hear that Afro-Fusion serves plant-based African dishes, they often ask, “Wait, so Africans are vegetarians?” Well, let’s clear that up. While meat is common in many African cuisines, there’s an abundance of traditional plant-based dishes that have been staples for centuries. And that’s what Afro-Fusion is all about — showcasing Africa’s incredible plant-based culinary treasures!
For example, on our menu, we feature West African jollof rice, a fragrant dish made with tomatoes, onions, and spices, paired with perfectly caramelized fried plantain. It’s a beloved comfort food across West Africa, and we keep it plant-based while preserving all its bold flavors.
From Southern Africa, our Nshima Plate offers a taste of Zambia. Nshima, a soft maize porridge, is the centerpiece, accompanied by umusala (sautéed greens) and visashi mushrooms (a rich roasted groundnut, mushroom stew). This traditional meal is as hearty as it is flavorful, highlighting plant-based staples from the region.
While Afro-Fusion doesn’t serve Ethiopian food, our friends at Ital Grindz specialize in mouthwatering Ethiopian dishes. Ethiopia’s cuisine, with its injera and lentil stews, is a fantastic example of how vegetarian foods thrive across Africa.
So, no, Africa isn’t entirely vegan, but at Afro-Fusion, we celebrate the plant-based dishes that have always been part of the continent’s rich culinary landscape. Join us in savoring these flavorful, nutritious meals.
