Creating sound and meaningful stewardship provisions in a farm lease will help ensure the farm stays healthy, productive, and environmentally sound.

A good stewardship plan is specific enough to be concrete and understood by both parties of a farm lease, yet broad enough to give the farmer autonomy and flexibility to employ their preferred farming practices and land management strategies. For example, the parties may agree that soil health is a shared principle, and enhancing soil fertility is a goal, with lease language that allows a variety of methods to achieve that goal.

While this guide can’t make buying a farm easy, we at Land For Good and The Land Connection do hope that it will reduce the anxiety that can naturally arise from venturing into new territory and making big decisions with long-term implications.

Please welcome Johanna Rosen, our New England Program Manager.

Jo fills a key role to help advise and educate farmers, landowners, and agencies on farmland access and transfer planning, particularly in southern New England (MA, RI, CT), and supports region-wide program development.

Jo is excited to coordinate our work under the Massachusetts Farmland Partnership Program through Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources that aims to help protect farmland, support farm businesses, and keep agricultural land in active use across Massachusetts. She will lead the team to educate farmers on transfer planning by offering technical assistance and advising the organizations that support them.
