Great question! Thank you for asking 🫶🏻 the short answer is yes! This is true. When breeding Blue X Blue birds together, that pairing will give you the potential for blue, black, and splash offspring.

It’s important to note that in addition to the standard solid colors that we recognize as blue, black and splash - there are certain pattern varieties that are also considered BBS (blue,black,splash) varieties. Consider blue and splash laced red Wyandottes or Blue wheaten and splash wheaten for example. Those varieties follow the same BBS color potential in the blue, black, or splash areas of their feathering as solid colored birds.

One key term to keep in mind with blue X blue breeding pairs is “Breeding True”. Birds who have identical phenotypes (blue x blue), who when bred together have the potential to create offspring who look different than those parents (blue, black or splash) do NOT breed true. Birds who do Breed True are completely replicable 100% of the time.

Examples of two varieties who breed true are splash and lavender. Breeding two splash birds together will yield splash offspring 100% of the time. The same is true for lavender birds. Breeding a lavender bird to a lavender bird will yield lavender offspring Every single time. These varieties DO breed true.

One tool that is really useful when figuring out genetic predictions in offspring is a punnet square. This is a screenshot from a video I did a while back that a friend reminded me about yesterday. 😘 (thanks Daniel) this video is still accessible, as well as an entire “chicken genetics” playlist over on both YouTube and Patreon. I’m sure it’s all been posted here over the years too, but I have found that old content isn’t as easily suitable here on Facebook..
