Both hives made it through the winter.

The annual kicking out of the drones has begun. This year is done. I only got 50 pounds of honey from the one producing hive. Honey supers are off. I will probably be feeding the rest of the month.

I added a second brood chamber to the new hive. The queen hatched last weekend. She will mate soon and start laying eggs some time after that. The first batch of new bees won't emerge for about a month. I gave them three frames of brood from the donor hive.

Bees exiting the honey super. They can find their way out of the maze but not back in.

I took the first batch of honey off. I put it on a separate stand because the hive is too tall and it's heavy! The escape board usually goes on the hive facing down so the bees exit back into the hive.

I took six frames of bees from the surviving hive and made a new one. The original hive has almost filled its first honey super so I added a second.

The one surviving hive has started finding pollen.

Only one out of six hives survived the winter. I haven't lost that many hives in a season in a long time.
