Look at all the seeds we have saved so far this year!!!

12 lettuces we have selected from last year's homebred mix, all yet to be named
1 heirloom butter head lettuce

Our hardiest pac Choi, purple Choi and arugula that survived last year's brutal winter

Not seen are carrot, leek, escarole, Italian dandelion, and spinach!!

Breeding our own plants and saving seed not only saves us money, but it also helps us develop strong plants that are adapted to our specific climate. Which helps us decrease our need for intensive management of specific crops!

We had a little bit of an exciting day today!!! We had our first ever grains harvested off the farm!! Triticale and bonus barley!!!

We had always intended to take the triticale, a wheat/rye hybrid once I found someone that was willing to do just 1 acre. It's a great cover crop and can be used as a flour.

But today while I was waiting on the combine to get here someone who had planted barley as a nurse crop to our new hay field said they were not going to be able to take it and said do whatever u want with it.

So, since the combine was coming anyway we got some bonus barley!!!

After some cleaning and testing we may have both available at the farmers markets!!!

Barley is used to make alcohol, can be eaten as a rice substitute, and has a great nutritional profile!!

Triticale flour can be used to make crackers!!!

Neither crop had been sprayed with chemicals, so other than the weeds seeds mixed in they are clean!!

We will winnow and clean these crops so we can offer them.

As soon as I can scrape up the funds I intend to purchase our own combine to be able to do more, this one was MASSIVE!!! Excuse my giggling in the video, I was quite entertained. I already know what, where,and how much the combine I intend to buy is. It will fit right in with our 1950s era equipment

How many tractors have I been running almost daily working on getting beds prepped for fall?

The last few days I've been prepping a large section of field for next year, a little less than an acre. Here I have a large load of mostly broken down compost I'm loading up to spread, using my ancient cobbled together manure spreader.

I had to plow, then disk it smooth. Now I'm spreading manure. Then I'll spread the cover crop seed and disk it in! Between that I prepped and planted the spring beds into cover crops and made some new beds for fall planting.

There are seeds to start, onions to harvest and hang and cure. Crops to harvest tomorrow for Saturdays farmers market at the Jamestown Farmers Market 9-1

Looks like we will have lots of onions and cherry tomatoes!!! I haven't pulled the row covers yet but I can see lots of greens, so we will have salad mixes back this week!!

We ourselves are short of greens at the moment, so stop over to our fellow market vendor Magitti to get your fill!!!

We are working on getting our fall plantings so we will have greens again eventually!

BUT we will have heirloom celery, heirloom cippolinni onions, scallions, leeks, silver slicer cucumbers, and PURPLE French filet snap beans!

All things that pair great with a salad!

Today has been catch up day on equipment repairs!!
The 3 point hitch and hydraulics on this old 1950s Ferguson 35 have been weak, this tractor is our main work horse. It does most of the brush mowing, hay cutting, baling, and plenty of other jobs. So getting it working right is important.

These old machines certainly take a beating, we limp them around sometimes, putting off repairs because of time constraints and finances. Luckily we have a parts tractor that I had rebuilt the top plate hydraulic cylinder on previously, which was what was causing the problem on this tractor. So a relatively quick swap was all that was needed.

This tractor still needs a full engine rebuild, but it's still running strong so we will wait until after hay season to worry about that. We have a few options like leaving this tractor together and rebuilding the motor on the parts tractor, then splitting the 2 and swapping motors, or tearing down this one and rebuilding it. Will probably go with option 1 because we can continue to limp it around until then.

I say "limp" but really just mean regular use while paying attention to fluid levels and carbon build up on the spark plugs. Running old equipment can be challenging but at least we can do most repairs in house!

We were honored yesterday to be able to host the 9th annual Farm to Table Dinner for the Jamestown Farmers Market.

Thank you to everyone who came and got to experience our little slice of heaven.

Thank you to all the volunteers who coordinated everything and all the sponsors who made this even possible!

When we set out to start a farm it was so we could contribute to the local community. Our small crew struggles with health issues that make it so working a regular 9-5 job is nearly impossible. While farming is incredibly physical and hard, it gives us the flexibility to keep our health as a top priority and develop our practices around our disabilities while still being productive and helping out the community!

Maybe sometime late this summer we will organize a farm tour to show you everything we have growing and talk about how your patronage directly impacts us! No promises though 😉

We will be inside tomorrow because of the smoke, so don't miss us!!

We will have home grown specialty cucumbers, heirloom celery, limited snow peas, cippolinni onions, leeks, scallions and more!

Due to the forecasted air quality for Saturday, July 18, the Saturday farmers market will move INDOORS for the safety of our vendors and visitors. You’ll find us in the St. Luke's Episcopal Church Undercroft at 410 North Main St in Jamestown (enter from Fourth Street).

We’ll still be open 9 AM to 1 PM with plenty of fresh, local produce, eggs, meats, maple syrup, honey, breads and baked goods, beverages, and handmade goods!

Stay safe out there this weekend! We’ll see you on Saturday.

Our onion patch is growing nicely!

Pearl onions are done,
Cippolinni onions look like they will be ready next!

Scallions are ready now, I can probably pick some small leeks!!

This week we should have Arugula, plenty of chrysanthemum greens (for anyone that's been on the fence about trying them), frisee, and baby lettuce mix.

There will be some other things for sure but those are the highlights for this week.

Just some great views from some old iron!!! Working on catching up on some mowing. I want to pasture this section of this field because it's one big hilly dip, not particularly fun to hay.
