Tomorrow is the Emmanuel Church Christmas Bazaar. Proceeds support four community organizations serving others. This year you will find jars of our Coops and Crops tomato jam. The church is on High and Cross Streets near the farmers’ market. Stop by when you shop at the farmers’ market tomorrow and pick up a jar or two.

Because we raised our poultry in movable coops, over the years we dug many trenches and added frost-free hydrants throughout our property. We could move our coops from the road at the upper left to the woods at the lower right and always be within easy hose range of a hydrant. Then the next year, after the birds had fertilized the soil and we’d raised a cover crop to incorporate the nutrients, we could plant a garden there and be within easy reach of a hydrant to use to irrigate.

Dean is retiring and the former home of Coops and Crops is for sale. We have six acres for gardens, a 14x24 greenhouse and two 96-foot high tunnels, a 30x40 garage/pole barn (with 100 amp service and a 8x8 walk-in cooler), a wash station under roof, a henhouse with nest boxes, optional moveable chicken tractors and poultry processing equipment … and a nice home.

We’ll miss it all.

Hi,
We are sorry it has been so long since we’ve communicated.
We are still not ready to return to the Chestertown Farmers' Market.

As Dean’s physical therapist keeps reminding him, recovery from this kind of injury is a long slow process. Dean is doing well but is not yet ready to do the level of work required for us to return to market.
Thanks to Where Pigs Fly for offering our frozen turkey breast cutlets and thighs while we’ve been gone.

We have summer crops like tomatoes, potatoes, onions, squash, cucumbers, etc., planted and hope to be able to bring them to market. When school ends, a young man who worked with us last summer and many Saturdays since will be returning; he will be a big help. We still have some laying hens but are no longer raising broilers, turkeys, or quail.

After losing hens to a predator for several days, we finally caught this guy in a live trap overnight. Anybody want a pet? (You’d need to live at least 10 miles away from us.)
