This is pretty exciting: Michael is taking the old engine out of the G to prepare for the new electric motor. Next, the axle needs to be taken apart to replace the brakes for steering.

Got a bunch of things planted outside, finally! Broccoli, Cabbage, Lettuce, Parsley, Thyme, Green Onions, and Fennel. Spinach is popping up, Baby Bok Choi, Turnips, and Arugula too.
Feels so good to be growing food again!

Also, remember when we didn’t get irrigation going until late June? 🫠

We got a slow start post-flood, but the season is ramping up! Sugarsnaps, radishes, and lettuce are pumping up, and arugula, spinach, and salad turnips won’t be far behind.

Planted out all the Cutflower bebés who are ready to go into the world! It feels so hot today, but it’s still April! Irrigation is on, and tomorrow I focus on food plants again. 🌱🙌🏼🌱
Thanks so, so much to Jess for bringing me all these Dahlias yesterday! 💐 They’ll go out as soon as they’re sprouted up.

At last, the Osprey pair have chosen a new light pole to nest on in the rail yard! This one was working at collecting dead branches out of one of my Ash trees to build the nest foundation.
I’m SO happy they decided to stay and rebuild. Just like the rest of us. 😍 It wouldn’t be the same here without them.

I have so many questions about how this season will unfold, ecology wise, post-flood. But the migration shift is in full-force; Golden-crowned Sparrows have headed back to the Boreal Forest for summer, and the Warblers, Goldfinches, and Swallows have returned to scarf all of the bugs.
These are the new voices I heard yesterday at the farm, plus Barn Swallows and Tree Swallows.
I’m relieved to see so much munching on tender leaves, on plum and nettle here. This means caterpillars and sawfly larvae are active and hopefully plentiful enough to satisfy the appetites of all the baby birds that are hatching and soon-to-hatch. 🐛 🐣

🫜Seeded some CSA food in one greenhouse today, and I’ll do another next week, and another in two weeks. Spinach, Radishes, Arugula, Turnips. Lettuce bebés go in Friday. We should be seeding outside this weekend.
🥔 Also, the seed potatoes arrived! 400 #. We’ll be getting them in the ground next week, but for now they’re chilling in the cooler.
🫛The CSA full season starts in just 4-5 weeks! There are still some spots left, but I’ll be cutting off signups April 30, so if you’re interested, get in there.
🥬 There is still time to sign up for Summer Only CSA (June-September). Link to the online store/signup is below, in comments.
🌱 Whilst flooded, my yellow workhorse Jang seeder was completely underwater in the tool room. The silty mud coating tells that tale. But a little oil and she got right to work. That’s resilience. ✨

Started planting plants outside today. The sun felt so good, and the earth felt amazing. ☀️
The U-pick Cutflower Garden is the driest outside spot, so Sean helped me put in the Sweet Peas, first round of Stocks, Clarkia, and Larkspur. More to come if it’s not too soggy tomorrow.
And if it IS soggy outside, we’ll be seeding greenhouses with spinach, arugula, and radishes and planting bebé lettuces for CSA.
We’ll be ready to fertilize and seed food outside by the weekend if it’s not too rainy this week. 🤞🏼

It’s been a busy couple days, thanks to a bunch of helpers! Natalie and Damion, and Sean helped get the Sugarsnaps planted and trellised. Natalie and Daisy helped transplant all the stressed bebés into bigger trays. And Sean helped me get the other three big houses ready to get prepped for seeding greens and radishes.
Still waiting on most of the farm to dry out so we can work up ground. But in the meantime, I’ll be filling up houses with radishes, spinach, lettuce, and the like. I can buy another 3-4 weeks of planting time this way. And with the bebés moved up, they’ll be ready to go in when the greens come out.

Also, found a mantis ootheca in the ground fabric. It’s probably not viable after being under water for three weeks, but still a cool find.
