🖤🐓 EVEN IF YOU DON’T LIKE CHICKENS… YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THIS BOY IS SOMETHING SPECIAL! 😍

You don’t have to love chickens. You don’t have to understand why I get so excited over a beautiful bird. Heck, you might think I’ve completely lost my mind. 😂

But COME ON. JUST LOOK AT THIS GENTLEMAN! 🖤

The Langshan isn’t just another pretty chicken. It’s a heritage, dual-purpose breed, valued for both meat and egg production, and one that remains on The Livestock Conservancy’s conservation priority list.

These birds were bred with purpose. Size, substance, elegance, and usefulness — all wrapped up in one magnificent package.

And THIS boy? The height. The carriage. The feathering. That gorgeous black plumage with its green sheen. 😍

He’s not just handsome. He’s a living piece of agricultural heritage.

This is why I love raising and preserving heritage poultry. It’s about so much more than collecting pretty eggs or having chickens running around the yard.

It’s about appreciating what generations before us worked to develop and doing our part to carry it forward.

You don’t have to share my obsession…

🥚🌈 SOME PEOPLE COLLECT STAMPS. I COLLECT EGG COLORS. 😂🐔

And THIS is why I’ll never be satisfied with a boring grocery store egg carton!

Just look at these beauties! 😍

From rich browns and soft rosy pinks to powder blues, dreamy greens, creamy pastels, and those gorgeous little speckles… every egg is its own tiny masterpiece. 🎨🥚

Six generations of agricultural roots, and here I am playing with chicken genetics like a kid with a brand-new box of crayons. 🤣

The best part? We’re just getting started! Between our heritage breeds and our Blue Alchemy and Confetti Bloom projects, I’m so excited to see what colors, blooms, and speckles the next generations bring!

Some people see a basket of eggs.

I see years of breeding possibilities… and a perfectly good excuse to keep more chickens. 🤣🐣❤️

🐣🎉 THE FINAL HATCH COUNTS ARE IN… AND HOLY CHICKEN MATH!! 🎉🐣

32 BABIES OUT OF 33 EGGS IN LOCKDOWN!! 😍🔥

That’s a 97% HATCH RATE! And I couldn’t be happier with how these little overachievers did!

🖤💙 LANGSHANS — 14 OF 15! (93.3%)
We put 15 into lockdown, and 14 beautiful babies made their grand entrance! Sadly, the one I suspected had quit developing didn’t make it. 💔 But the exciting news?! WE HAVE BLUES!!! 💙🐣 I cannot WAIT to see how these babies develop!

I was lucky enough to snag a generous half-dozen of her eggs, and every single one hatched! Talk about showing up and showing OFF! 😂💚

🎨 STONEHEART’S SILVERUDD BLUES, BLUE ALCHEMY & CONFETTI BLOOM PROJECTS — 12 OF 12! (100%)
Apparently, these little nuggets understood the assignment and decided nobody was getting left behind! 🤣🐥

And now for the next adventure…

🧬 32 DNA SEXING TESTS HEADED TO PERKINS ON MONDAY! Along with some blue-egg gene testing, because apparently hatching them isn’t enough… I need to know what genetic surprises they’re hiding! 😂💙🥚

The Langshans have the bottom brooder all to themselves, while the rest of the fluff nuggets are partying upstairs!

I am SO excited to watch these babies grow, feather out, and see what the next generation brings to our breeding programs. ❤️

🐣🧬 AND THE HATCH DAY MADNESS CONTINUES!! 🧬🐣

Pulling the rest of the babies out of Incubator #2 and getting everybody ready for DNA sexing and blue-egg gene testing where needed! 💙🥚

I’m also getting ready to start wing banding my chicks for permanent identification, but until they’re big enough, I’m loving these little rubber bracelet bands!

They’re flexible, easy to change out as the babies grow, and make keeping track of everybody so much easier during those first 2–3 weeks. 🐥💕 Of course, I’m checking fit and swapping them as needed because these little nuggets grow FAST!

Between figuring out who’s a boy, who’s a girl, and who’s carrying that beautiful blue-egg gene, I’m like a kid waiting for Christmas morning! 😂🎄

Now for the million-dollar question…

HOW MANY DNA TESTS DO WE THINK PERKINS WILL BE GETTING FROM STONEHEART THIS WEEK?! 🤣🧬

At this point, I might need a frequent-flyer rewards program! 💸🐔

I’m SO excited to watch these babies grow, feather out, and develop! There’s something extra special about hatching chicks from your own breeding program and getting to see what the next generation brings.

Will they have that gorgeous black sheen? Beautiful type? A little show-ring potential? 👀🏆

While everybody else is working on making their grand entrance, these little show-offs are ready to get this hatch party STARTED! 🎉

The anticipation, the tiny peeps, the little beaks breaking through… I don’t care how many times I do this, it NEVER gets old! 🥹❤️
