After a FULL week at the fair, I finally had a chance to slow down and actually look at what the girls have been putting in the egg basket… 👀🥚

And apparently while we were busy with goats, chickens, shows, ribbons, trophies and all the fair chaos…

SOMEONE STARTED LAYING. 😂

Actually, I think we have a few new layers! 🎉🐓

I’m seeing some new shades, different sizes, speckles, creamy greens, blues, pinks and browns that have me going:

“Okay… WHOSE BUTT DID THIS COME OUT OF?!” 🤣

So now we begin one of my favorite homestead games:

🥚 WHO LAID WHAT?! 🕵️‍♀️🐔

Time to start stalking nesting boxes, comparing egg colors and figuring out which of the younger girls officially joined the payroll. 😂

And I have to say… that little rainbow basket is looking PRETTY darn good. 😍🌈🥚

Fair week may be over, but apparently the ladies had a few surprises waiting for us when we got home. ❤️

Hardest part of the entire week. 💔🐐

And just like that… the trailer pulled away.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the barn today.

We knew from the very beginning what raising a market animal meant. We knew this day was coming. But knowing it and actually standing there watching that trailer leave are two very different things.

Mic wasn’t just a market goat.

He was early mornings and late nights. Feed buckets. Weigh-ins. Walks around the yard. Baths and blowouts. Learning how to clip. Practicing showmanship. Frustration, laughter, lessons, accomplishments and a whole lot of love.

For Aiden’s first year raising a market goat, Mic taught him more than any ribbon ever could—responsibility, patience, dedication, animal husbandry, and one of the hardest lessons that comes with raising livestock.

And yes, you can raise an animal for food and love that animal deeply at the same time. In fact, I think caring this much is exactly how it should be.

We gave him a good life. He was loved, cared for, spoiled, named, talked to, scratched, fussed over and probably fed more treats than he needed. 😂❤️

Today was the part of 4-H that hurts.

But I wouldn’t take away everything Mic gave Aiden just to avoid this goodbye.

Thank you, Mic Tatonka. 🐐❤️
For being his first.
For teaching all of us.
And for leaving a much bigger mark on this family than one little goat probably ever knew.

Not too shabby for a kid, a couple of chickens, and a whole lot of work behind the scenes. ❤️

I knew we had some beautiful birds, but today was one of those days that makes all the work behind the scenes worth it.

Aiden showed his non-market poultry today, and I am SO incredibly proud of how he and his birds did!

Then his Langshan headed to CHAMPIONS ROW…

And somehow, it got even better.

His Silkie competed in the Senior Class against 8 Silkies and didn’t place this year—but that’s showing animals. You bring what you’ve raised, learn from the judge, celebrate the wins and come back better next time. ❤️

But can we talk about that LANGSHAN?!

From raising these birds at home, feeding them, cleaning pens, getting everybody bathed and blown out, hauling them to the fair and getting them settled… to standing there today with a BEST OF SHOW bird.

I am one seriously proud mom. ❤️

And I’m pretty sure Aiden might need a little more room on that belt buckle for all the swagger after today. 😂🏆

Okay, THIS basket. 😍🥚

Tonight’s egg collection is basically the entire color palette showing off at once.

The ladies may be slowing down for the season, but apparently they’ve decided quality over quantity. 😂

That pink/purple bloom, the almost sage/gray greens, those icy blue eggs, the speckling, creams and all those different shades of brown… this is exactly why I love having a mixed flock and working on the breeding projects I do.

And that big heavily speckled green egg front and center?! 🤌 Chef’s kiss.

No grocery-store carton could ever. ❤️🐔

Fair prep is officially in full swing! 🐐🎡

Tomorrow is weigh-in, so today was all about getting Mic Tatonka cleaned up and ready to make his fair debut.

Aiden handled the bath and blow dry, and then Mom stepped in for a little clipping lesson. ✂️ I showed him how I like to work the clippers, and then it was his turn to get some practice in.

This is the part of a 4-H project that I love—the stuff that happens before anyone walks into the show ring. Learning how to wash, dry, clip, handle, feed, exercise and present your animal doesn’t happen overnight. It’s months of work, followed by these last little lessons as everything comes together.

And judging by that last picture… I’m pretty sure Mic has some opinions about this entire process. 😂🐐

🚨 FAIR WEEK IS OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY! 🎡🐓

The poultry show team is packed up and headed to the fairgrounds for a whole week at the fair!

And before anyone asks — EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. got the full pre-fair spa treatment. 😂🫧

Baths ✔️

Feathers fluffed ✔️
Attitudes fully activated ✔️

Seven freshly washed and blow-dried chickens are now loaded into the chicken-mobile with enough supplies to make it look like we’re moving out. 😂

Now it’s time for a week of feathers, showing, judging, early mornings, late nights, fair food, livestock, dirt, chaos and hopefully a ribbon or two! FAIR BOUND! 🎡🐓

Nobody ever sees this side of Sid. 🖤

Mr. Big, Tough & Handsome got himself a nice wash and blow dry today because we have a show to get ready for next week. ✨🐾

Apparently being freshly bathed is absolutely exhausting, because afterward he climbed right into my arms, cuddled down under the blanket, and decided this was where he belonged.

For everyone who only gets to see his serious side… this is my Sid. 🥹

Big boy. Soft heart. Mama’s baby when nobody’s looking. 🖤

Enjoy the cuddles now, buddy… because next week it’s time to show off. 💪🐾✨

But we’re here, we’re parked, and fair week preparations are officially underway!

Also… can we take a moment for this TREE ROOSTER?! 🐓🌳 I absolutely love him. Of course I find the giant rooster within five minutes of arriving. 😂

Now the countdown is REAL…

🎡 T-MINUS 5 DAYS UNTIL FAIR! 🎡

Five days until the animals, early mornings, late nights, show clothes, livestock haircuts, nerves, excitement, fair food, chaos, and all the memories that somehow make us sign up to do it all over again next year. ❤️
