β Bac Xiu (Cloudy Milk Coffee) β A Sip of Old Saigon
Few realize that βBac Xiuβ actually finds its roots in Cantonese (η½εΊε°ε‘), a term once widely used by the Chinese-Vietnamese community in the historic Chợ Lα»n district of Saigon.
The full name of this iconic drink is βBαΊ‘c TαΊ©y Xα»u PhΓ©.β Simply put, it is a glass of hot milk accented with just a splash of aromatic coffee.
Legend has it that during the French colonial era, black coffee was often too bold and bitter for women and children. To soften the edge, Saigonese began adding generous amounts of condensed milk, using just a touch of coffee to preserve the aroma while creating a sweet, creamy, and easy-to-drink treat. And so, Bac Xiu was born - sweet, smooth, and velvety, with a graceful, lingering hint of coffee.
More than just a beverage, Bac Xiu is a sophisticated fusion of three cultures - Chinese, French, and Vietnamese. It is a drink deeply woven into the fabric of Saigon mornings, traditionally enjoyed alongside a warm sesame donut or crispy fried dough sticks.
If youβre craving a hot cup of Cloudy Milk Coffee this morning - infused with the scent of roasted beans and the light creaminess of condensed milk - stop by MΓa & More and treat yourself to a true taste of Old Saigon!
