We get asked all the time how we keep predators off our pasture raised, and “free to roam” broilers- the answer is ✨ hope✨
😆
Just kidding- keeping predators out of an all-you-can-eat buffet of thousands of broilers takes constant defensive measures.
In order of effectiveness-
⚡️ Solar Electric poultry netting- we keep a perimeter around all of our birds, this doesn’t always keep the birds in, as their feathers insulate them from shock, but it keeps out the ground predators
🧑🌾 Our presence- someone is almost always here, walking here, mending that, all predators think twice when humans are around
🐕 The Farm Dog- our dog patrols for most of the day. She has free run of our farm, but she does come in at night. The smell of dogs alone is a deterrent
🐈⬛ The barn cats- our barn cats may not be able to fend off coyote, but the rats that want our feed and possums that want our chicks don’t have a chance
🦉 Owl decoys- since owls are territorial, this makes aerial predators like hawks and other owls think twice, however they need to move daily
👹 Scarecrow- our scarecrow happens to be a plastic 4’ storm trooper, but anything human-shaped does the trick. Like decoy owls, they need to move daily to be effective.
📻 Talk Radio- a waterproof solar talk radio is a great nighttime deterrent. Keep it on an AM talk station and predators might think the humans are around
🪤 Live traps- baiting a live trap as soon as a problem arises is essential. Removing the problem swiftly keeps casualties low
🐦⬛ Befriend the natural deterrents- Crows and mockingbirds can’t stand Hawks, in fact they HATE them- not only will they alert you to their presence, they will actively attack them. We always make sure to leave plenty of our pecans, blueberries, and mulberries to keep the local “police” satisfied.
🎄 Laser Decorations- nighttime predators can’t stand a light show. If the birds are close enough to an electricity source, we have in the past broadcast a festive laser light show on them.
What are your fav ways to keep your free range birds safe?
