Anyone know a winemaker hoping to buy some organic-certified white grapes?

Our grape buyer recently declared bankruptcy, so we will have roughly 12 tons of our CCOF Organic Certified Marsanne and Roussanne grapes (6 tons each) from Sonoma Valley for sale.

(Don’t worry: we are still making our Baker Vineyards wine, but we have a lot of extra grapes!)

DM me if you know anyone. We are happy to ship them a couple of bottles to try, and to show them the vineyard. Thanks for helping our small business!!

The fertile Sonoma Valley provides us not only with delicious grapes, but also with a bounty of beautiful, plump olives. These 10 trees grow huge organic green olives that are perfect for brining and eating, while the 49 trees on the perimeter of the property - a different olive variety than these - are smaller but produce a copious amount of oil. We will harvest them next week and do a custom press with a local olive mill.

When we begin to sell our wine next year, we will also offer organic olive and olive oil baskets!

Harvest is a busy, nervous and exciting time in wine country.

Due to the drought (on track to be the driest year of the past century), mother nature delivered an average of 40% less yield than average here in Sonoma Valley. We produced 8 tons of Marsanne and Roussanne, down from our average of 12-14 tons. We sold all of it, trying to approach break-even. Maybe next year…

In the meantime, scattered amongst our two primary varieties are 36 Syrah plants - not enough to sell, but a perfect amount for homemade wine! No smoke taint this year!! Woo hoo!! Huge thanks to my awesome neighbors Carleen and Bob. Making wine truly takes a village.

We ended up with 15 gallons (70ish bottles) of Syrah (90% Syrah, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Roussanne) and 9 gallons (40ish bottles) of an experimental blend of my neighbor’s totally random grapes: 50% Valdiguié (no, I’d never heard of it either) and 50% Black Muscat (a dry red wine with similar aromatic qualities to its white cousin that is usually made sweet.)

We won’t be selling any of this wine, as there isn’t enough and we are still learning and improving. But next year we are going to hold onto a few tons of our Marsanne and Roussanne, make it commercial grade, and officially launch Baker Vineyards as a label. Stay tuned!
