Summer nights on Moon Mountain are unique to Sonoma Valley.

As the sun drops behind the ridgelines, warm days give way to cool evenings, creating the ideal conditions for another exciting stage in the vineyard. Right now, we’re patiently awaiting veraison—the moment when grape clusters begin their transformation from firm green berries into the deep purples and rich colors that signal ripening has begun.

Veraison marks the countdown to harvest. From this point forward, every warm afternoon, every cool night, and every breeze flowing across the mountain helps shape the balance, concentration, and character of the fruit.

It’s one of our favorite times of year. The vineyards are full of anticipation, the days are long, and another vintage is beginning to reveal its story.

Not every vine gets an easy life.

This steep section of our Ballfield Syrah vineyard forces the vines to work for every drop of water and every nutrient they find. The rocky slopes naturally limit vigor, producing smaller berries with thicker skins and concentrated flavors.

The angle of the hillside matters, too. Steep exposures capture sunlight differently throughout the day, helping Syrah achieve full ripeness while the cooling influence from the San Pablo Bay preserves freshness and structure. Good drainage prevents the vines from becoming overly vigorous, allowing them to focus their energy where it matters most—into the fruit.

The result is a w**e with depth, intensity, and character that can only come from mountain-grown Syrah. Dark fruit, savory spice, structure, and a sense of place that speaks directly of Moon Mountain.

Sometimes the best w**es come from the toughest ground.
