I wasn’t confident about the garden this year, since it seemed so late getting it in and we didn’t really fill it up. But, we are getting a decent amount of cucumbers, zucchini and garlic. The onions did ok. Our second ever attempt at sweet corn is doing much better than the first time.

Hey folks, the chicken processing is done. It went great! We had help from some neighborhood teens and a couple of friends from Mpls. 91 chickens done between 9 and 5, of course with set up the day before, some clean up after that day and additional clean up the next day. The birds are in the freezer now and ready for pick up or delivery. It looks like they averaged about 4.25 lbs. $6/lb for home grown, pastured, trans organic fed, solar/waste oil heated water scalded, lovingly cared for up until the moment chicken. Let me know how many you want.

The chickens are almost ready. We are going to be processing this Saturday and selling whole birds for $6/lb. The video explains how we raise them on pasture. (The 100 chickens are in two pens, but I only show one of the pens.) Contact me for more details on pick up or delivery of chickens in the Kerrick-Duluth area and the Cities on a more limited basis. In a subsequent post, I will share the ingredient tag for the transitional organic feed we are using. Transitional organic feed is from fields that are in the three year transition between conventional and certified organic, so organic practices have been adopted, but the field is not certified yet. It’s important for farmers to get a premium on this product to support their transition. So, although cheaper than organic feed, there is still a hefty premium over conventional feed. You’ll see that the feed contains many ingredients including minerals, vitamins and probiotics, all of which contribute to a healthy product for you.

The mad rush of getting the garden in is almost over. All the beds are ready, just a few more things to plant. It feels late, but part of that was the early Memorial Day. My cardboard and wood chips effort to suppress the grass between the beds was a resounding failure.

The sheep and cows are back in the ditch again. The lambs are growing fast, including Junior, the bottle lamb. Time to start weaning him I think.
