Croft Family Farm

Croft Family Farm Nourishing Colorado families with fresh, nutritiously dense, locally grown produce. (The Croft Family Farming Beliefs)

Not all farmers farm the same way.

For years chemical practices have been the standard for many farms, especially as farms have gotten bigger. The natural knowledge of farming from the past has been forgotten or thought irrelevant. But, the farm is not a factory; instead it is a human management of soil organisms of the natural world. Soil fertility in the natural world is maintained and renewed by the recycling of all plant and an

imal residues that create the organic matter in the soil. In the natural approach, the farmer adds organic material to build the soil and nurture the hard-working soil organisms. In the chemical approach the soil is bypassed and plants are fed directly with synthetic plant foods. Plants may grow well and look healthy but are they nutritious? The thought that we could ever substitute a few elements for a whole living system is like thinking an intravenous needle could deliver a wholesome delicious meal. Not all organic farms have the same practices. Organic farming cannot be held captive in a rigid set of rules. It depends essentially on the attitude of the farmer. Deep-organic farmers, in addition to rejecting the ‘just feed the plant’ system, look for better ways to farm by mimicking the patterns of the natural soil-plant economy. Like farming in the pasted that used natural soil foods we also grow legumes, green manures, and add compost to create a vigorous soil life. Shallow-organic farmers, on the other hand, after rejecting harsh chemicals may look for a quick fix and use ‘safe’ or organically acceptable chemicals. Trapped in a belief that the natural world is inadequate, they end up mimicking the patterns of chemical agriculture. The goal of shallow-organic farming is to follow the approved guidelines to keep their certification. We achieved our organic certification last year and we are proud of that. But, even more important than being certified is our commitment to engage in old fashioned deep organic practices. Always learning and working to make our soil healthier every year. Healthy soil = Healthy produce which = a Healthy YOU

Oh Potager, oh wow!! Steve and I got on the road for our weekly restaurant deliveries and decided we needed a treat. Of course, the only logical answer to this conclusion was to stop at one of our restaurants. Chef Paul, Eileen & the whole crew, amazing! You never disappoint & always exceed expectations.
The flavors were so outstanding & delicious. Our server, Alison, was so fantastic! You elevated our experience and did a tremendous job with our wine flight pairing. Which by, the way was so much fun and complimented each of the dishes delightfully. I wish I’d gotten more pictures! Love you all! Thank you for doing such a wonderful job of taking our produce and that of local farmers then turning around to make something magical.

It’s that garlic time again. We like to plant our garlic 3 lines to a bed and 6” apart. With 14 beds and 25 minutes to a bed it took us about 5 and a half hours to plant our garlic this year. Not bad! We will put these baby’s to rest and watch their little heads pop up next spring.

Somehow it’s already last day of market. Thank you City Park community for such a wonderful year! For all the hugs, laughter, connection and the never ceasing dedication to your local producers. You all are being the difference this world needs! Happy winter and cheers to many more market seasons! 🥂

Your Family’s Farmer

SIX GENERATIONS OF FARMERS... 1947 was the year my grandfather left Kansas and moved his family to Colorado. They settled on a farm east of Greeley right along the South Platte River. Michelle and I, along with our seven children, farm within a mile of that original farm. Besides having farming in our heritage, there were other things that influenced us on this journey to become organic growers. One oldest son battles autism. Through our research, we came across dietary interventions that have helped him. We became very aware of how much food in the grocery stores is not always as it appears. Reading food labels became a way of life, and we were astonished at how many harmful things like chemicals, additives, and preservatives are in our foods.

It became essential to go back to the past and make most of our meals from scratch. From there, with our farming background, it was an easy step to grow and preserve more of our food. In our efforts to take control of our food and our health, we became growers of pure and healthy food.

We are no longer certified organic but our standards of growing produce have not changed. We grow using the same methods and philosophy held by the USDA Certified Organic Program. We at Croft Family Farm do not support GMO's and will not intentionally grow or sell any variety of produce that has been genetically modified.

Hope our journey helps yours! Steve & Michelle Cockroft and family Healthy soil = Healthy produce = a Healthy YOU
