A couple weeks ago a hail storm ripped across our farm in the night. In the morning things looked a little different.
It’s been about 10 years since we got hit by a storm this bad.
Many might look at these scenes and see plants that are destroyed, but we see a lot more than that.
We see the beginning of the season as we cultivated the soil, made beds, laid mulch and drip irrigation, started baby seedlings in our nursery. We see ourselves nurturing them until they were big enough to transplant in the field, then the endless watering and weeding after. We see these plants fruiting at the peak of the season, almost ready to harvest. We see so, so many hours of hard work gone in a couple of minutes. Still, the work is never quite erased when your body remembers it all so well.
It’s often challenging to grapple with these aspects of farming. If the work doesn’t scare you off, it’s a miracle when you stick around knowing you have almost zero control of the outcome.
Shout out to everyone who has reached out with loving support and kind words. Shout out to all the farmers risking it all.
Luckily roots and alliums can weather just about anything it seems like and we will still have a really lovely Fall/ Winter CSA starting mid- October. It’s actually amazing what survived. We have been out harvesting what we can. There are treasures to be found.
