Reign and Poppy Preschool

Reign and Poppy are learning something every day. They are curious and thoughtful when navigating new situations. Five days a week I try a “preschool” activity with them. Each activity lasts 5 minutes. Some of their favorites are grooming, picking feet, haltering, leading with a butt rope, and yielding to pressure.

Reign and Poppy are also learning lessons from their dams, other horses at Edenbrook, and Mother Nature.

*I always wear a helmet and vest when working with the foals. And I require it of my employees as well. The dams are phenomenal mothers, the foals have spectacular temperaments, but they are all still horses. Safety first!

I’m working by myself on the farm today. Honestly, it was hard to watch those babies out in the rain. I wasn’t in a position to lead two mares (they are good, but you never know), and have two big fillies, unhaltered, bouncing back to the barn. So I prepped stalls for tonight so they can rest on dry bedding. Dave will help me bring in the pairs this evening. We will have another big storm soon. Thankful for the rain . . . sort of.

The foals experienced their first thunderstorm this afternoon. ⚡️⛈️

It was a heavy downpour, big claps of lightning, and booming thunder. I captured the moment the mares taught their foals about bad weather. The foals started to run circles around the mares, but watched their mamas stay calm and brace against the hard rain and loud thunder. They copied their mamas. It was really magical to see.

Reign loves to be groomed. While I was grooming her dam, she decided to see what else was in the bucket. I just missed filming her hold the stiff brush in her teeth.

Poppy loves to bed down in her dam’s hay pile. Bindi just eats around her and sprinkles hay on her baby.
