AQHA Mares at Edenbrook Farm This is a blog to share the journey of breeding my AQHA mares.

I added a small tarp to the paddock last evening. Poppy, the Welsh/QH, needs something to do to keep her busy. Reign, the Han/QH, is the braver foal, and told Poppy “it’s just an old tarp, Poppy. Kinda boring.”

The babies had more visitors and more experiences this month. And we have been busy prepping for our son’s wedding! Once the wedding weekend has ended, these babies will go back to preschool. Lesson plans will include: leading, obstacles, time away from mom, hoof rasping, and bubble baths.

Herd order.

In the evenings, when it is time for dinner, this herd has a certain order when racing back to the smaller paddock.

Annie, the chestnut mare, is large and in charge. She’s confident, fair, and cool headed as the lead mare. She keeps both babies in line, and assists Bindi with keeping anything threatening at bay.

Reign, Annie’s filly, never strays far from her dam. She is quiet, friendly, curious, and follows the rules.

Poppy, Bindi’s filly with the wide blaze, is full of energy and s***k! She likes to test the herd rules, and Annie keeps her in line. Poppy is bursting with talent and athleticism, and she’s learning not to be too big for her britches.

Bindi, the bay roan, is a first time mom. She is wonderful with her fire cracker filly, and acts as the security guard for the whole herd. You can count on Bindi to queue up her cow horse DNA, to chase any threat to the group. Bindi is usually the last horse to race back, making sure the babies are well looked after.

The third video shows both herds peacefully cohabitating. When I moved W***y Wonka, Red, and Jules, back to their paddock, the fillies whinnied for them.

The second video shows a calmer meet n greet over the fence. The foals thought this was a grand day! Very exciting to meet new friends. Their dams were tolerant of the whole ordeal, and are probably exhausted from all of the “excitement”.

The foals are 14 weeks old today. I would like to wean them when they are 20+ weeks old. Today I decided to do a slow introduction to the babysitters! It was anything but slow! Could W***y Wonka actually be faster than all of them? 🤣

Every afternoon we call the girls in from the big field for their feeding. But today I did something different. It was an impromptu grooming session for all four. No food, just grooming and lovies. Then the babies had a nice chat with my boarder and her mare, Fiona.

Slightly switching the routine for these babies is good for them. They are practicing how to self regulate their behavior when the schedule changes. I’m enjoying starting these babies with little tasks, little “asks”, and building their confidence in all situations. Good job, babies!

The world is filled with lovely humans!

My 3 month old foals are accustomed to activity on the farm and meeting lots of people. In the field, during a riding lesson, or while they eat, these babies are learning to stay calm, and that people are safe. Thank you to my friends for this week’s visits! Brenda, Mary, Bonnie, Laura, and Lily.
