Did you know we're fostering hamsters?!
This is Giggles and Shredded Wheat and I'm fostering them through Tiny Whiskers Animal Rescue.

Shredded Wheat likes teacup rides, peanuts, and running on his wheel lightning speed so he's a centrifuge.

Giggles is curious and friendly, loves carrots, and will climb into your hand for a little rock-a-bye before bed 🥰

Can you hear it munching? It's Pine Sawyer season! This little dude can be heard inside the tree in the video. This is a blow down on the farm from 2024 that took out 17 of my trees in 75 mph winds.

The beetles help break down the trees, their larvae feed the birds over winter, and there are plenty of them! You're can hear their loud jaws crunch down on the wood.

We leave deadfall on the farm to feed and house overwintering wildlife, and in turn I get free education on who my "roommates" are on the farm, and how I can feed them too.

I brought four items to the County Fair as I wanted to dabble in new things.
All four were 1st prize in their class, and I won Grand Champion for my dried Chile de árbol peppers.

For the blackcurrants, I sun-dried some outside, pressed some for jelly (dried the husks for tea) and then I rehydrated some of the sun-dried ones using the juice, and dried them again.

It took 8 days to pick the berries by hand, and 2lbs were left on the bush because the spotted winged drosophila had gotten them, finally.

Drying took up to two weeks so they retained a raisin texture. They were inspected, and 'burped' daily while curing the berries for three weeks before they were ready.

All in all, I got 3 jars of jelly, 2.5lbs of sun-dried, and a cup or so of candied and tea berries.

I would say through trial, great product, though the manual labour you have to put in is steep, especially if you're running your farm solo using only hand tools and a cub cadet. Pretty tasty though 👀
