🛑 Let’s clear up a huge misconception: switching price tags is NOT a "life hack"—it is a prosecutable crime.

We have noticed an increase in "tag swapping" or "sticker switching," especially around our Fresh Meat section. Some people think that because they are technically still paying something for an item, it isn't really stealing.

That is entirely false. Under the law, intentionally altering, moving, or swapping price tags to pay less for an item is classified as retail fraud and shoplifting.
Here is what you need to know about how this illegal behavior impacts our store and hurts every single honest customer who walks through our doors:

• It drives up prices for everyone. Grocery stores operate on incredibly razor-thin profit margins. When a thief swaps a tag to buy a premium cut of beef for the price of ground chicken, the store has to absorb that loss. To stay in business, grocery stores eventually have to raise retail prices across the board, meaning you pay more for your weekly essentials just to cover someone else's theft.

• It slows down checkout lines. When a mismatched tag alerts our cashiers, the entire lane grinds to a halt. Our staff must pause to call a manager, verify the correct item, and correct the price, causing unnecessary delays and long lines for everyone else.

• It forces stores to invest in heavy security instead of better services. Money that could go toward lowering prices, hiring more staff, or improving the store is instead funneled into advanced security cameras, extra monitoring equipment, and high-tech weight sensors.

The Legal Reality:
You do not even have to leave the building to be charged. The second a person alters a price tag with the intent to defraud, the crime has been committed. Grocery stores heavily monitor the aisles and checkout lanes via high-definition surveillance cameras. Perpetrators will be caught, permanently banned from the store, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, resulting in heavy fines, a permanent criminal record, or jail time.
