My name is Noah Edwards. I am a third-year animal science student at Ohio State University. This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Hall’s Calf Ranch. Through this experience, I was able to further my passion for the dairy industry through multiple outlets. Though I have experience within the industries genetic advancement and reproductive side, this summer gave me an insight into the business based commercial operation. In addition, I was able to develop life long friendships with the employees of the ranch, giving me the insight in the importance of bilingual communication. As I transition into my future career endeavors within the industry as a food animal veterinarian, now more than ever, I find it so crucial to be able to be a bilingual professional. This summer I was able to find that passion and goal, and will continue with classes in Spanish this upcoming semester and consecutive semesters. Thank you to the employees of Hall’s Calf Ranch for being fun and enjoyable friends this summer! In addition, this summer we conducted an on-farm trial pertaining to the implementation of Thoracic Ultrasound Scoring (TUS), and antibiotic metaphylaxis in its effects on Average Daily Gain (ADG) and treatment occurrences. This trial gave me the opportunity to explore the impacts of Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) in pre-weaned dairy calves and the importance of the subclinical diagnosis that the TUS offers. I appreciate the experiences and connections I made this summer in the dairy state, Wisconsin! Thank You!

Our final Intern Spotlight, meet Clarissa!

“Hi, my name is Clarissa and I am one of the interns this summer. I am from Fort Atkinson, WI. I grew up on my family’s 250 cow dairy where my favorite thing to do was care for the calves. I was in 4-H and FFA through which I showed pigs for 10 years and dairy for 3 years at the county fair. In the fall I will be junior at UW-Madison majoring in Dairy Science with a certificate in Agricultural Business Management. When I heard about this internship through a friend who previously interned at Hall’s, I was very interested since I love working with calves. I have really enjoyed being able to work with the calves all day, everyday and learn about the daily tasks at Hall’s. Some things I have done include taking and reading bloods, shopping bloods, feeding calves, moving weaned calves from the hutches to the barns, helping unload the trailers of new calves, and much more. This summer one big task that the other intern and I have had the opportunity to do is the feed trial. Each day we follow the milk cart to make sure they all drink, feed and record how much grain they get, and do a quick health check on all the trial calves. I have also had the opportunity to go on the route to pick up calves and help prepare the milk for feeding, both of which I really enjoyed. Everyone that I have had the opportunity with at the ranch makes the experience even better. This internship has been an incredible experience and I’m going to miss it and all the people!”
