So-called soap that you buy in the stores nowadays contains detergents, pesticides and chemicals , these are made to lather and give an appearance of getting you clean. These “soaps” are made with chemicals that are actually harmful to us. My soap is not. I use oil and lye. And of course we all want it to smell good and look pretty. So I also use a combination of essential oils, fragrance oils, na
tural coloring (like from spices) and soap coloring. Real handmade soap may not lather like what you are used to (some do and some don’t), but it is getting you clean without stripping your skin of its
natural oils. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and whatever you put on it will penetrate it in 8 seconds(thanks Angel J ) And back to the oil and lye. ALL REAL SOAP IS MADE WITH LYE. There is then a chemical reaction in which the oils,“eat” the lye and saponification occurs, creating soap. My soap is cold process soap, which means that after I make it, I leave it to cure in the open air for a minimum of 4 weeks before it is for sale. This means that I may put soaps online that are up and coming, meaning it is made, but needs to cure the full 4 weeks. I know, it’s hard for me to wait too. All my soap is completely handmade. This means that all bars are not alike. Most of the square or rectangular bars are weighed as I cut them and will weigh between 4 and 5
ounces (sometimes more). The molded shapes are all different weights, and I will list them at approximately what they weigh. How you store your soap is also very important. Soaps need a well-drained surface, meaning they don’t like to sit in water or they will become a jellied mess. If you treat your soap right it will last a very long time. My bars in my home generally last several months, and with 5 of us here using them constantly, that is something!!
